attempt to survive immediately after war's end (WWII, that is).
Roberto Rossellini completed the film in 1947: all of it was filmed on location and the bombed out shell of a city, Berlin, is really the central character. No matter how much you've read of that period, this film will shock you.
What would you do to survive--to ensure the survival of your family? What does it mean to be "human?"
Rossellini provides no answers.
This film cannot be missed by serious film viewers.
Follow Ups:
From Billy Wilder to Tourneur many films has been in the post war Berlin, Rossellini certainly is the most poignant realsitic and not neo, of all the films I knows on this theme, being far better that documentaries only.
Berlin did get what it deserved, a tragedy.
