HMV have got a DVD sale on and I picked this up for £3. It is one of those well regarded films that I have been thinking of buying for many years.I don't intend to do a blow by blow analysis. It is the story of a young pool player who gets his money by kidding average Joes into betting their money, and then taking them to the cleaners. He gets his chance to play one of the big boys, and having taken him for lots loses it back .... and this is just the beginning.
I found this a massively powerful piece of cinema. Although the story revolves around pool it is, at heart, the story of damaged people.
Follow Ups:
just a whisker in front of Hud or Cool Hand Luke

scenes with both he and James Mason.
that he was over the top in his younger days. His acting improved when he suffered a huge personal tragedy; he toned down the acting GREATLY. TRT Perdition is my best example.
In addition, he has picked some really good roles in his later years. I understand he plans to make one more film before retiring.
I know, but listen to Ruger Hauer's voice, and look at Hauer's face in the opening few minutes in the car. I AM TELLING YOU!!!! IT is Paul Newman, and the voice is a voice over by Newman."Because I cut off his legs. And arms. And head."
That is Paul Newman's voice, imagine at the same time hearing "Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill you!" Same voice.
In an otherwise forgettable film called "Message in a Bottle" Newman has a coupld of very strong scenes and puts the other actors to shame.
Newman's scene in the basement with Burl Ives makes me teary eyed every time I watch it!
I always thought that he should have gotten the oscar for it rather than Gleason.
