This 1960 release is a documentary on the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, by then its fifth incarnation. The film intercuts performances by jazz greats with shots of sailboats competing in the America's Cup trials. High points include performances by Thelonious Monk with Roy Haynes, the 1958 version of the Gerry Mulligan pianoless quartet, Chuck Berry with Papa Joe Jones sitting in on drums, and the opener, a stunner by Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Brookmeyer, and Jim Hall. The DVD contains some interesting extras but the first half of the film is marred by some channel imbalance problems with the soundtrack (which I can fix by some athletic knob twisting). Like "A Great Day in Harlem", a wonderful look at the jazz of the late fifties, prior to modal improvising and fusion.
Follow Ups:
but the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired; even as a Mono presentation without the channel imbalance issues, sound quality mars what would otherwise be excellent
Strangely enough, half way through the DVD the 5.1 sound reapers, and sounds pretty good to boot.
and they're both dreadful
I've always suspected the source material was not up to much
Now I know the project was actually *Cursed*Grins
By "dreadful" do you mean the sound or picture quality or both? I had the laserdisc for a long time and I don't remember it being bad for an analog rendition of a film shot in 16 mm.
it's the quality of the *Sound*; its dull and lifeless, I picked up the LD first and then the VHS to see if the sound was improved ( it wasn't )
Maybe a digital remastering might save it....
