Strangely enough, half way through the DVD the 5.1 sound reapers, and sounds pretty good to boot.

I've always suspected the source material was not up to much
Now I know the project was actually *Cursed*Grins
By "dreadful" do you mean the sound or picture quality or both? I had the laserdisc for a long time and I don't remember it being bad for an analog rendition of a film shot in 16 mm.
it's the quality of the *Sound*; its dull and lifeless, I picked up the LD first and then the VHS to see if the sound was improved ( it wasn't )
Maybe a digital remastering might save it....
