I think three things helped...Not being so disappointed that LD got killed (it's still disappointing 'cause it's just human nature - or most humans' nature - to want the good guy to win... but not as disappointing).
Not seeing it in Times Square with a crowd laughing at and talking back to Jack Nicholson's hammines and, along those lines, not watching a 20' tall hammy JN. At TV size he didn't come across as SOOOO over the top. In fact I was actually able to appreciate his performance.
I also liked Matt Damon better this time around... he didn't do much for me the first time and I was even more riveted by LD's performance (he blew away everyone else in that film and, I believe was only rivaled by Forrest Whitaker's Amin).
There was a plot weakness I didn't notice - or just didn't think about - the first time around. If the identity's of all these undercover guys was so closely held by all the principle's then how did the cop that shot LD know that MD was JN's inside man?
That aside, while I still think the acclaim is a little overblown, it was a much better movie - to me - than when I originally saw it and one of the very rare times a I enjoyed a movie more at home than in the theater. It's possible I didn't like it so much the first time because it was so frustrating that MD's character was the one that kept having things work out in his favor. Killing him just didn't seem like enough.
Follow Ups:
Although predictable, I was impressed with Leonardo Di Caprio (again). And must say, LD is best thing going for Hollywood right now.

My personal distaste for his appearance and mannerisms were reinforced during BD. I couldn't wait for his demise and was delighted he didn't even get a smooch.Leo is crap except for "The Departed" for which I really felt he was good. His biggest joke was "Iron Mask" when he had the lead and was surrounded by Irons, Depardieu, and Malkovich. That was the height of bad casting.
...so he might 'appear' to me as an exeptional, because he occupies this particular space at this particular time. Who knows?

for you ;-)
Have you seen any good porn lately? In the apartment I stayed in someone left Tinto Brass' Monamour in the player... so I watched it... just to get the feel of what's happening in the industry... if you know what I mean...

...I didn't finish it. I don't know why anyone would. The actress (actress???????) has too much to show, and too little talent.Let's just say I did not suddenly become a Brass' fan.
He "...chose the actress for her bottom. As usual."
I like your thoughfull approach - nothing beats a good research!
I would have liked to see Wahlberg handcuff Damon and as he was ushered past the woman she leans over and says "It's not your baby"
That's just me
Got something for you
That would've worked for me and for a character like MD's it probably would've been worse than death. But this time around I didn't mind (as much) that he was *only* killed.
