go and see it.A Belarussian adolescent on the brink of manhood is swept up by the army to stop the brutal German invasion. Soon after his conscription, of which he is extremely proud, he is deafened by mutliple explosions from a German barrage. He wanders, disoriented and separated from his comrades, through a landscape littered with skirmishes, corpses, and wild-eyed characters desperate to stay alive.
In the back of the viewer's mind, of course, lies the uneasy knowledge that these same brave soldiers also are fodder to their leader, Josef Stalin.
Shot often in extreme close-up with intriguing blending of ambient sounds and music.
During one particularly suspenseful scene, a somewhat electronically altered and eerily cheery Strauss waltz played.
Do not overlook this brilliant, fever-pithched classic.
Follow Ups:
I read somewhere that he used live ammunition in most of the film -- real bombs, tracer bullets, etc --- to add to the authenticity. The use of sound and imagery is amazing and horrifying all at the same time. Not an easy film to watch, but a must-see, no doubt.

Did you see the previous arguments?
He lived until 2003.
What a masterpiece, even if it were his only one.
