Yes, there were several moments when one did see an intelligence shining through the cliché, such as the bits about WWI England and the senseless deaths, and the snippet about great minds' thoughts reaching out to those in the present (though spoiled a bit by the hamming of who usually is a fine actor).
The death of the old lech was a bit Hollywoodish, too.
Are there any happily hetero men in England or are they straight by default?
