In Reply to: I just saw a French film that made me feel the same way (in regards to the lack of depth/popcorn movie aspect)... posted by sjb on May 11, 2007 at 21:40:54:
Have you seen " Le Diner des Cons " & " Le Placard "?
Not much depth but FUN and a kind of light humanity.
The film you describe is unknow to me.
Do not know why I ask, but have you seen " Un Coeur en Hiver " ?
Follow Ups:
I did see "Un Coeur en Hiver". It was a while ago. I remember it being frustrating but not much else... don't think I gave it my full attention so I just added it to my Netflix queue.Haven't seen the other two but the bring a dumb guy to dinner thing looks funny... also added.
Auteil is also in "The Valet"... in which he's a billionare with a supermodel mistress. When they get photographed together he tries to convince his wife (and the press) that she was really with another guy -- who's also in the photo but his face is blurred out when it's published. That guy's a parking valet and they find him and convince him to live with the supermodel so that poeple will believe that they're a pair. Various hijinks ensue.
That and Ave. Momtaigne are new big screen releases here... don't know how long ago they came out in France.

" Un Coeur en Hiver " is all between the lines, at a time when Auteuil did not overplay himself...
"The Valet " got not good critics in France, but I can not comment as I have not seen it.
The French title is " La Doublure ".
You must know that the story writer and director, Francis Weber, has alwas a hero in all or most of his films called " Francois Pignon "---
"Le Dinner des Cons and Le Placard " ( which you should see ) have him...
Weber is the best and funniest of all French directors.
Look at his work...You will see from Jaques Brel ( the singer ) to Depardieu and MANY others, all were there.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0891554/
Check his films out!!
Here a link, in French, but with the best critics of my country, do not forget to put the FRENCH title in the search option.
You do not need to read French as there are stars.
Is in the same vein as "Un Coeur..." I did not like it very much after a second view.
Victor did like it more than I did.
Only recommended if you now fully appreciate " Un Coeur..." now,,,,
