I am quickly becoming a big Bergman fan... after 42 years of not seeing any of his films I've seen three now in the last several weeks and it just keeps getting better. There is nothing wasted in this film... everything matters... there's no filler and no skimping (what a tough, delicate balance to achieve).
The acting is pitch perfect (I'm also becoming a big MVS fan) and the story is so immensly tragic and just as immensly, hopeful.
One of the treats of the Criterion edition is a talk by Bergman (and discussion with the students) at AFI. It's audio only but it's a treat to hear him talk about his craft/art.
Next on the Bergman list for me will be the "faith" triology... Through a Glass Darkly/Winter Light/The Silence.
Follow Ups:
I have never seen, nor do I ever expect to see, a better film. The Naked Night (also known as Sawdust and Tinsel) is also one of the greatest of his lesser known films. Then of course there's....and then also...and...
Working my up in time (not every film of course but every period), in order.Soon enough though... after the trilogy I'll be into the early 60's and Persona won't be too far behind.
I am, very much, looking forward to it.
But I was so young then... so innocent... so... untarantinoized.
and it was still pretty horrendous. In fact, if I hadn't just seen "Come And See" a few days ago it would be the most horrendous thing I've seen in a movie in quit a while.
Terrible...A real torture to watch, back then.
scene is undiluted because it is classic.
The purity and innocence of the girl, the viciousness of the attackers... the calculation and coldbloodedness--- these always will retain their impact.
But hey, I'm still amazed by "Paradise Lost."
Missed that. Which Paradise Lost?

As we are on a film forum I assumed that you were talking about one. And as there are many films with that possible title...
I was stillin my diaper when I read it.
