Mutiny on the Bounty gets my vote for best Laughton performance though his performance in Hunchback of Notre Dame was also great. Have you seen the remake of Les Miserables with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush? Rush was an excellent Javert in it. That's one remake that I can recommend.
Haven't seen it, but might give it a watch. In general, remakes of
classics fall far short and are rather pointless; e.g., "King Kong",
Invasions of the Body Snatchers", "The Thing", etc.; sometimes there
are exceptions, especially going from silent to talkie. I'm a big fan of
B&W so color as a determining criterion doesn't cut it with me; it sure
didn't help on the remakes of "Island of Lost Souls". - AH
