I finally got my hands on a DVD of "47 Ronin" and I am having great time... so far we went through the first part, so I am looking forward to another great evening. The quality is VERY good (it is black and white, 4:3, of course) and the subtitles have the proper black border around them...
A wonderful film, paced just slow enough to let you deliberately enjoy it...
Also slow enough that you can run upstairs between the two phrases to make more popcorn.
I don't think I need even bother to recommend it.
Follow Ups:
Great film -- wonderful pacing, performances, everything. Now you might want to pick up "Chushingura" for another fun evening.
Actually, I envy any viewing. My DVD copy disappeared on loan to my nephew for his film class.Forget the Inagaki version (in color); too self-important and pompous.
This is a film that must be watched more than ones. It is like hot water under ice - at some point it is going to burst through.A wonderful work of art by any standard, even if it will be hard for many to sit through. Fortunately it is divided into two parts, each one almost full two hours long.
Think about all those house chores you would not have to do... four hours of freedom!
