Not to forget - indie films do not necessarily have to be THAT difficult to watch for ordinary people ;-) You should check out "Chutney Popcorn" by Nisha Ganatra if you get the chance - it's a wonderful romantic comedy, yet without the weight of the genre's clichés to it. Or how about Hal Hartley's films? Start out with something like "Trust" or "Simple Men".
