Pretty good movie, but it directly takes from Goodfellas and Boogie Nights. The only problem with the movie really is, though, the last 1/4 where it just gets too melodramatic and wants too much sympathy for the Depp's character.Doug Schneider
Follow Ups:
actually, I kept thinking about the Godfather with the whole family over crime aspect. That said, I loved the movie... especially the obscure drug references (and the way the cocaine scenes were shot); It's obvious the filmmakers have experience with narcotics. To me, it made the movie very honest and believable.
i actually can't see what & how it takes from Goodfellas and Boogie Nights. THe only similarities it seems are long hairdoes (which is chronologically correct) and Ray Loitta, who did a sensational job here. The chemistry between him and Johnny Depp -- two tough guys -- is surprisingly well done, especially for the father&son roles. It is true that the story seems biased toward Depp's character, but for some reason I didn't view this movie as one about a real character.
Watch Goodfellas and you will se almost dead-on narration (Depp even SOUNDS like Ray Liotta). Watch the editing closely and then also watch Boogie Nights and look at the "color" of the film, editing, mix of visuals with sound, etc. It's very obvious that he somewhat "modelled" the film on those.Doug Schneider
