Watch Goodfellas and you will se almost dead-on narration (Depp even SOUNDS like Ray Liotta). Watch the editing closely and then also watch Boogie Nights and look at the "color" of the film, editing, mix of visuals with sound, etc. It's very obvious that he somewhat "modelled" the film on those.
