Hi,I was using imdb.com to look up some Russian war films that were recommended in another thread, and came up with this list :
Recommendations for A zori zdes tikhiye (1972)
Suggested by the database:Obelisk (1976) -
Pamyat (1971) -
Under en steinhimmel (1974) -
Idi i smotri (1985) 8.8
Porokh (1985) -
Radi neskolkikh strochek (1985) -
My smerti smotreli v litso (1980) -
Gorkij mozhzhevelnik (1985) -
Chyornyj kapitan (1973)I am very interested in A zori zdes tikhiye 1972 (The Dawns Here Are Quiet) but have not found any information on a North American release.
I have had no luck in finding either the other recommendations or the others on the above list. The only ones I have found with North American releases are Come and See, My Name Is Ivan, and Commissar. If anyone has seen any of the above and can offer any comments re either the actual film or its North American availability, I would appreciate it.
Thanks.

Comissar isn't about WWII. It's about a Jew and a gentile woman in the time of Revolution. Excellent film!!!
I recommended The Dawns. Try to find it. If you won't be lucky, I'll check out the local Russian video/book store, perhaps even today, since I have to pick up some Nabokov for a friend. Some of the tapes they sell have subtitles.
I could only find info on Porokh(Gunpowder).Never heard of the other ones.
Also try The Thirst(Zhazhda).
And The Ballad of (or about?) a Soldier - a true classic. It's available on dvd.
Thanks Dmitry.Well,.... I guess the search can be fun also.

A Zory Zdes' Tikhie is brilliant, The Cranes are Flying is all-time classic, plus few more:"Nobody Wanted to Die" - an absolutely fantastic film with great actors, takes place right after the war, but a must.
"Destiny of a Man" - film by Bondarchuk. Also with him: "Story of a Real Man"
"Khronika Pikiruiuschego Bombardirovschika" - soft-touch war move, with great Oleg Dal'.
"The Immortal Garrison", "The Sky Slow-Mover", "Lad From Our Town" - all these with wonderful, wonderful Nikolai Kryutchkov
"Secret Agent" or "The Scout's Exploits" with Pavel Kadochnikov, of Ivan the Terrible (the idiot cousin) fame. Entertaining flick.
A great, great film, even though not about the WWII, but rather the Civil war: "Thirteen". You will see that plot later used in "Sakhara" with Bogart.
"Vesna na Odere" - with one of the most beautiful Russian actresses ever, Liudmila Chursina.
"Trouble Business" with one of the all-time Russian greatest - Mikhail Zharov (Maliuta Skuratov in Ivan)
If you sort of liked Dr. Zhivago but thought it fell short, then "The Flight" should be about perfect. This is simply an INCREDIBLE film with too many stars to list. An absolute must.
Dva Boitsa, Sluzhili Dva Tovarischa, Zhdi Menia, and many, many more. There is such incredible wealth, yo ujust start digging and there is no bottom. But you probably already got more than you need.
