If you thought Traffic was a good movie about the war on drugs, Requiem for a Dream is in the similar vain but more surreal than documentary take on drug use. Great flick.
Follow Ups:
I thought Pi was an excellent movie, but Requiem devolved into directing for directing's sake. It's one thing to use the camera to set mood by choice of shot, angle, etc. It's another to use editing to increase tension, etc. It's entirely another to get so cutesy that you mock your own style. I so wanted to like this movie because I dug Pi so much, but it was insufferable after about an hour. And that was a half an hour too long.
It's too bad you didn't like the film. I thought the movie was pretty good - also thought Pulp Fiction was great but most movies I see I don't like much at all. PI looks real good too, glad you liked it and I plan on seeing it soon.
Hello,Requiem was not supposed to be a cup of tea. it was more about experiencing a really terrible nightmare not necessarily about drugs, but about trying to find peace within oneself.
it was also not an easy movie to watch. i left the theater feeling more depressed in many ways than i had in years. i wouldn't consider it a negative flick though. there was really no hope for the characters in the end but their experiences were supposed to, I think, bring reflection in our own worlds.
as per Traffic - i hated it. the silly movie bored me to tears. it was not only like looking at movie and not experiencing it, but very much like watching an 80's movie on drugs. steven soderdork was one of the most overrated directors last year. did it discuss the drug problem? sure. maybe one tiny step beyond a PBS documentary filmed with a digital handheld from circuit city with obvious use of color filters. yech! waste of my $9.50. nothing inventive in the whole flick!
btw, GO SEE PI!! it's madness is not unlike that of Requiem.

chiggy
