I'm sure there are two sides on that! But Entertainment Weekly, not a bunch of easy critics, gave the movie a very interesting write-up. A.I. got an A-!clark, who's now eager to go
Follow Ups:
Spielberg (and Kubrick) probes deep; I saw A.I. yesterday at noon, as I am big Spielberg and Kubrick fan, A.I. does not disappoint. Be sure to take large box of kleenex with you.
give the devil his due.If it's a good flic, it's a good flic, politics notwithstanding.
At least it's the first of this summer's releases that seems to be worth the $$$ to go see. On the "strength" of so many bad reviews, I have avoided the others. "Pearl Harbor" is at the theater just a few blocks from my house (right next to an Irish pub); but I have resisted the temptation to drop in. Maybe if I tank up on Guiness next door, I won't care.
BTW, the movie ain't doing well at that theater. I can tell because no one's coming all the way up to my street to park on weekend nights.
I was expecting a cross between D.A.R.Y.L. & Blade Runner. What I received was a disney flick filled with characterless political spin. One might as well call it mindless pictures presents "desparately seeking computer wore tennis shoes" via an enormous budget. In amidst all the BS they forgot to write a cohessive plot. It managed to obfuscate all the critical issues & stick to DNC propaganda.

masses with roller-coaster type films like Jaws, Raiders, Jurassic
Park etc., but I stay away from his overtly political stuff like
Schinder's List. - AH
..we all would be buying it.Jesus, Bruce, don't tell me I HAD to put that smiley in!
In all seriousness, in the forum devoted to films, it is completely proper to discuss why we would, or would not watch particular works. So I DO have problem with certain movie makers and will not watch certain works. Actually, I will not PAY to watch any of Speilberg's films, but I will watch them for free. I refuse to support the things I abhor.
That is NOT just politics based, it is more general with me.
But I honestly just meant this to be a quick silly joke - please, please, I am not even from Australia!!!! I think we are giving it too much attention already.
So back to Clark's original question... Later we might decide to discuss the question about how our personal experiences take part in forming our opinions on things "pure art". I know that will be one peaceful discussion.
There's always something that rings somebody's bell. While I don't have any issues with Mr. Spielberg (although I don't share his politics), I do have issues with Messrs. Travolta and Cruise for their substantial support of the "church of scientology." It is not that I don't share the church's beliefs (hell, I don't know too much about what they are); it's that I don't approve of how the church has used the legal system. So, I confess to being, at best, a reluctant attendee at their films (only a very positive reivew will do).
There was a Jewish lawyer of my acquaintance (not long ago deceased) who fought in WW2 and also held sub-cabinet posts in the Truman administration. Although he could certainly afford them, he would never buy German or Japanese automobiles. It was, for him, a matter of principle.

It is simply that I do express them more directly, and you... well, I presume you are not the worst lawyer in town.
Also, your feelings towards that church are completely alien to me, as I don't know that side of their activity - so more statement for PERSONAL experiences.
And there is no question people see the same situation differently. Some Jews will not buy anything Germans, and others have moved to Germany after the war and settled there.
is my partner. He can't walk and chew gum at the same time. He either stumbles or chokes; and sometimes does both.
But I need him around to make me feel good!
I've got a couple experienced engineer coworkers that require supervision. One dude tried to cold work composites. Another tried to computer model shrink fitting one pipe over another by thermally expanding the material in the radial direction. Still another, that regularly shows up at my office whenever he wishes to print something. I could go on ...

Victor, just curious: what bothers you about Spielberg? There are some elements of his movies that annoy the hell out of me, but it seems you've really got a hate-on for the guy's work. How come?Rich H.
Rich, it happens on two planes. On the artistic one I consider him an artisan, not artist. Plus he speculates on important subjects. When I watched his SPR I kept wondering just what Bergman, De Sica, Bunuel, Allen and other have been doing all those years, if all their effort was now continued by..... THIS?..... Watching that movie was like listening to me play piano.
On the societal plane I think he contributes to moral corruption of this nation. In his position he is capable of doing anything he would like. He doesn't need to worry about money. So at this time he could be doing what is right - producing films that would bring out the best in people, by losing money perhaps.
But he keeps pushing forward his business. I am all for business, except in art. There, at certain point I think the artist should become concerned with his obligations towards the society, as the moral decay we are experiencign today is trully frightening.
What is right? This is absolutely personal decision, but to me Woody is right, and Stephen is not.
Clark, send your $7 to a conservative charity, stay home and watch Ninochka one more time. Do you REALLY want to give that guy another dollar? That's another dollar to Clinton's election fund...PS I was going to put a smiley on it, but then decided the issue was too important...
