...in which he portrays a a family man who gradually has a breakdown, losing his job etc? I saw it some years ago and it really hit me but I can't for the life of me remember the title.
Also loved his over-the-top performance in the China Syndrome. What a great actor & human being.
Follow Ups:
I loved three comedies that Jack Lemmon was in: Irma la Douce, Good Neighbour Sam and Avanti. My favourite of the three is Irma la Douce. When I was a kid, I fell in love with Shirley Maclean after seeing this movie. Avanti was very light-weight, but a lot of fun; evocative of many other light European comedies. After all this time, I can still remember the beginning of Good Neighbour Sam, with the catchy music and the crazy machine. I really can't think of a role in which I wasn't utterly convinced by Jack Lemmon's portrayal.Cheery-bye Jack.
transitions between comedy and drama with ease... His performance in China Syndrome was heartfelt and sincere and I personally felt he deserved the BA award for that role (Dustin Hoffman won for Kramer vs. Kramer). Shirley Maclaine on the Larry King show the other night pointed out Lemmon's ability to make all of us feel like he was one of us while at the same time exuding "star quality". Apparently when on the set and just before the cameras would start to roll, Lemmon was always heard to say under his breath... "magic time". When I was studying acting in college, he was one of my role models. He was a gentleman, socially conscious and a great talent. I will miss his ability to make me feel the "magic"... Rest in peace Mr. Lemmon.
