Okay, so "The Haunting" (old Robert Wise and new versions) were based on the book "The Haunting of Hill House"). And the one with Roddy MacDowell discovering that the evil spirit was pissed about his vertically-challenged stature was "The Legend Of Hell House" (sorry Mart, I screwed up last time). So where did the "House on Haunted Hill" rank between these other two? Maybe they should drop the word "House" in the titles and make horror films about condos, duplexes, split-levels, and A frames.

Exorcism - Telly Salavas!; House of Frankenstein; House of Fright; House of
Horror; The House of Long Shadows - Price again; The House of Psychotic
Women; The House of Seven Corpses; House of 1,000 Dolls - Price again;
House of the Black Death; House of the Damned; House of the Living Dead;
House of Usher - Price once again; House of Wax - Price again; The House
on Sorority Row; The House That Dripped Blood; The House Where Evil Dwells.- AudioHead
There was also a 1928 film, "The Haunted House" which was loosely based
on the 1924 Broadway play of the same name; no dialog, just post-synched
sounds and songs.
As far as ratings of all these movies, I would rank "The Haunting" (original) as #1, a true supernatural horror classic, scared the livin' bejeebees outta
me, the "bulging door" scene is unsurpassed. In fact, the movie scared
me much more than the novel.
"House of Usher" was decent; "The Legend of Hell House" was good too; but
I liked Matheson's novel, "Hell House" better, yes, the diminutive Eric
Belasco had one monstrous ego!
The original "House On Haunted Hill" is a camp classic and was not intended
to deliver the dramatic impact of the aformentioned movies; it's simply a
fun, entertaining film. Vincent Price really hams it up; but my favorite
performance goes to Elisha Cook. - AH
TAFKA Steve- Tried shaving my butt with a cheese grater, YEOW! Anyway, House on Haunted Hill (a William Castle extravaganza) was pretty hoky. Lame special effects and stiff acting were the main culprits. I'm sure we need a remake of this one like we needed a remake of Psycho!
