***Good to hear that you are still getting out into the theaters. I went to a theater Friday night (saw Besson's "Kiss of the Dragon"--aka "Jet Li kills the Paris police force") and got stuck there for five hours as there was a bomb (probably not a 'torpedo' bomb) that was being isolated and detonated on the theater exit road. If this is the only way to get people to sit through "Pearl Harbor"...Well, I have to tell you that the summer is looking good for foreign films. And I am tempted to see The Man Who Cried - I love Cate Blanchett (and John Turturro is there too) - and that will probably do for me on the American films front.
Also on my list is the Russian Doll. Most likely a silly but fun Australian comedy. With lines like "Where are the sheets? Why, in the toilet, of course!" (A true inside joke, I don't know how many will get it...) it seems to have the right elements of the "Midsummer comedy".
Also on the list are:
Divided we Fall
The Aniversary Party (with Phoebe Cates????? She's still alive?) well, perhaps I am just kidding about this one, but she USED to be cute.
Sexy Beast - an absolute must. Nuff said.
Songcatcher
....and.... of course.... The Princess and the Warrior. No, I am not a fan of Run Lola Run, but still, that's another must.
Left Luggage - love some Belgian films.
Sorry about that torpedo-bomb... they should have called Bruce to disarm it....:-)
Follow Ups:
The newspaper explanation: Police detonated a bulging 20 gallon tank filled with anhydrous ammonium hydroxide in the back of a car. The owner had shoplifted cartons of Sudafed and police pursued him. He is in custody charged with drug manufacture as the stolen ingredients could be used to synthesize methamphetamine.
***anhydrous ammonium hydroxideWhat is an...hn anhyd... hydr... amm... htl... oh, hell, that's that STUFF?
And did they really have to detonate it? Seems like they just detonate whatever they find these days. Headlines: "Police detonate an abandoned child found in the back seat of an SUV"
Anhydrous ammonia = ammonia without water. I've only used this stuff once in my career, to carry out organic syntheses of short segments of DNA. See the link for explosive potential when mixed with air.The more conventional, "concentrated ammonium hydroxide", is a 30% solution of ammonia in water. I broke a gallon container of this in my high school chemistry lab and the school was closed for the day (and I still didn't get voted Prom King, damnit!). Glass cleaners containing ammonia are much less concentrated.
I'll vouch for the fact that she's STILL quite cute. But the real purpose of my note is to second Sexy Beast -- now this is a fantastic little crime thriller.

***I'll vouch for the fact that she's STILL quite cute.Well, being born into a rich family, pampered all your life, never seeing hard times does wonders for one's looks. It is not like she had to lift 100lb at a meat packing factory 40 hours each week.
But that dumbell husband of hers... in terms of acting inaptitude that couple competes with the best out there... they could even take the Tom/Nicole duo straight on.
If you mean Kevin Kline, then I think he is brilliant at playing on-screen idiots (the fascist American thief 'Otto' was his Oscar-winning role in "A Fish Called Wanda", and I loved his philandering idiot, 'Joey Boca', in "I Love You To Death").
