Musicians Cassandra Wilson and Mose Allison are seen performing in this better-than-average crime caper. Robert DeNiro, Marlon Brando, and Ed Norton put in fine performances and this would make a decent double feature with Michael Mann's "Heat".
Follow Ups:
Ed Norton and Robert DeNiro are decent in this film.. Marlon Brando is a drag....
...but you beat me to it.I enjoyed the film - it's not deathless art, but any summer flick aimed at adults is something to be thankful for. Those 3 lead actors raised such high expectations, I think I was hoping for just a little bit more grit and a few more surprises.
Besides the jazz guests, the thing that pleased me the most about this movie was its lack of violent Hollywood cliches: no car crashes with gigantic explosions, no gun battles...what a relief!
simple movie, with a cast of any less it would be a disaster. However, its still a nice movie. Edward Norton was great. DeNiro was great. Here, he's not the typical Deniro gangster. He's very subtle in this particular role, capturing very well the nuances. You see someone at a juncture having to make an important decision, you see him almost second guessing himself, you see him relieved when its all over. A great portrayal of the character without adding his own color. Too bad its not written for Brando. However its interesting to note that some 30 thirty years ago, Brando portrayed superbly a powerful old man who is probably older than the character in this movie; Brando's today reminds how great he was.
You liked? I thought the film was rather slow, and without motivation in the case of the main character (Deniro). The "suprize" ending was just the opposite for my friends and me when we saw the film last week. I agree with the comments on the quality acting though. Too bad the movie wasn't up to par with its stars.
You're right, the plot was strictly conventional and there were no surprises, but I give it points for being well-executed and acted. Also for being filmed in Montreal. Which brings me to my main gripe: why doesn't anyone except for the two club workers speak French, the official language of Quebec?
I meant to write: Michael Mann's "Thief" (starring James Caan). But either double feature would give you most of the cast of Godfather's I and II.
