What a great contrasting work with his wonderful performances in the Jean de Florett and Manon. What other works of his should be considered and available?
Un Coeur en Hiver-My favorite Auteuil performance along with Jean/Manon. Un Coeur also stars the gorgeous Emmanuelle Beart. I haven't seen Mama There's a Man in Your Bed.
A very interesting movie, with well defined characters, even if somewhat strange ones. Was not crazy about the choice of music - the French composers usually leave me completely unexcited (we shall leave the Bolero out of this discussion). Either the Music Teacher, All the Mornings or the Basileus Qartet would be my choice over this one if music was the criteria.
But as the movie, it is very good with fine acting and a lot of human faces with the capital H. Somehow while watching these people one can't imagine that there is the whole another world (or should we say "underworld"?) where the images of Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone rule.
Any other suggestions? Pull them randomly.
I was in the midst of a severe Beart infatuation when I saw Un Coeur En Hiver. I saw it right after watching the Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring, but it was Auteuil who impressed me. Hardly seemed the same person who played that odious wretch in Jean/Manon.As for recommendations, here are a few fairly recent foreign films that I've enjoyed over the past several years:
Leolo(an odd but absorbing and occasionally gross film)
Zentropa(set in post-WWII Germany)
Before the Rain
The City of Lost Children(visually amazing)
The Monster(Roberto Benigni comedy)
Europa Europa
Wings of Desire(just about anything directed by Wim Wenders is worth seeing)
Burnt by the Sunand one old "must see" is M(early Peter Lorre film that is just superb).
I'm sure I'll recall more, and I'll toss a recommendation in from time to time. I keep telling myself that I should put together a list of my favorites from all genres, and I'll probably do that sooner or later.
Enjoy! :-)
Ridicule and the Depardieu version of Cyrano de Bergerac are two more very good foreign films. Since you liked Un Coeur, I think you might also like the trilogy consisting of the movies Blue, White, and Red from the director Kieslowski(some great acting in those movies especially Blue with Juliette Binoche and Red with Irene Jacob). I liked Red the best then Blue then White, but all three are worth seeing.

Yes, I have seen these.
What do you think about Greenaway? If talking about the stunning visual presentation nothing may be close to the Prospero's Book.
Prospero's Books is visually very impressive. I generally like Shakespeare movies but didn't like Prospero's Books as much as I expected to, and I'm not really sure why. It's one I should probably see again. I haven't seen many of Greenaway's films, but I thought The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover was very good. Helen Mirren is another fine actress who usually works in that alternative world to the Bruce Willis-Sharon Stone world.

I could not take my eyes off the screen, every image was beguiling and capticating with total and dominating good taste - given my unbridled love for classical art. At the same time I felt more and more tired as it went along, it was like an very essence of the best wine but just too condensed, I felt like I needed some water to dilute it to palatable level, just too much, too dense, too thick... I am asamed to admit, but after one hour I started rolling forward in fast mode, still captivated by images, but diluting, diluting...
When it comes to images thick to be cut with knife I know of nobody who comes close to Greenaway. Drowning by Numbers was much lighter than the Cook and you probably have seen the Pillow Book.
I have to struggle to make my wife go see his movies - she believes no one has the right to stick his hand into her guts and start tirning... I don't entirely disagree.
So anyone who loves oppulence and overindulgence should look no firther.

I even forgave her for her part in Caligula. Actually she was quite good there. Heck, there were SEVERAL people who were good there. Was there ever another effort like that one, with trully great actors doing trash?

Well recently, I thought Mission Impossible was a huge waste of acting talent even though I found the movie marginally enjoyable.
***Un Coeur en Hiver-My favorite Auteuil performance along with Jean/Manon. Un Coeur also stars the gorgeous Emmanuelle Beart. She IS gorgeous. Someone on the imdb.com had opinned that she is the most beautiful lady on screen today. I don't know if that is true, but she is certainly one of several very serious contenders. Me, I still can't get over Audrey - to me she might always remain the most feminine of all screen females.
Will try to rent it on Monday.
***I haven't seen Mama There's a Man in Your Bed.
It is quite entertaining.
