When I first saw "Hudson Hawk" (actually it was on in the background while I was at the computer and I only got glimpses of it), I thought it was a little stupid. The next time it was on I sat through the whole thing from the very beginning. Different take. This was one hell of an innovative movie! It had elements of Monty Python and the Keystone Kops, with a little Steve Allen-type humor thrown in. Very cleverly done. Even Bruce Willis was a natural for the part. What's your opinion?
I did enjoy some of the zaniness (the Vatican jokes, the CIA candy bar agents), but I have to get drunk for the rest of it to wash over me. Bruce Willis was a natural? Hell, he wrote the part while he was a bartender!
That every movie is conceived to have a certain identity - either a comedy, a mystery, a love story, etc. However, few, if any, succeed fully, or even come close. Hudson Hawk was conceived to be a spoof, a farce, and it succeeded 100%. That's pretty high praise IMO.
