We all know that genre... a macho man in charge of protecting some very important sexy creature. Clint and Sondra, Tom and Mimmi...Which one is your favorite? Are there any that don't really fall into too trivial a cliche?
To set the tone a bit higher - let me suggest a real beauty: "How To Steal a Million". That was a due worth remembering: Peter and Audrey.
Any others? The reason you remember it? Big boobs? Steamy sex? Subtle acting? Story line?
Follow Ups:
that may not work...um...i really liked "out of sight" but that may not work either. same with silence of the lambs.how about the worst?? jim carrey and that dolphin in pet detective? or that one with arnold and the kids where he plays a teacher...or the bodyguard...blech!
dammit victor, you asking some tough questions so late at night.
regards,
chiggy
Zhong Nan Hai bao biao (Chinese Title) (1994)Jet Li at his finest.
> > Zhong Nan Hai bao biao (Chinese Title) (1994)
> > Jet Li at his finest.Me think Jet Li at his finest is in 'Fist of the Legend', a worthy remake of Bruce Lee's 'The Chinese Connection'. A good story, and some really cool martial arts in an appropriate context.
Honestly, I like them all.
I think there is more character development for Jet in Defender than just about anything else I have seen.I saw the movie you speak of about two weeks ago and loved it all over again.
This has less action and more social commentary than your average action movie (and perhaps more than most American movies mentioned here)

Miami Blues. Good, good movie:Alec Bladwin = Bad Guy
Jennifer Jason Leigh = Innocent Prostitute Beauty
Fred Ward = Grizzled cop.
Synopsis (from AllMovie.com, edited so as to not give away the entire story):
Based on the late Charles Willeford's series of hard-boiled crime novels featuring Miami cop Hoke Moseley, the Jonathan Demme-produced Miami Blues opens with the prison release of Frederick Frenger Jr. (Alec Baldwin), a deranged killer who has barely de-boarded his plane before he's killed . .. . . in the airport. Checking into his hotel, Frenger meets up with Pepper (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a young prostitute with dreams of domestic life; the two become romantically involved. Meanwhile, the . . . . case is given to Moseley (Fred Ward), a grizzled vet who quickly hunts down Frenger only to have the killer beat him senseless and steal his badge. With Moseley incapacitated, Frenger is free to continue his crime spree . . . . . . .
Anyways, this is a great movie with fantastic characters.
Great movie!!!

***Jennifer Jason Leigh = Innocent Prostitute BeautyYou watch enough Hollywood films - you think they all are. Then you meet one on the boulevard and it is a shocker of your live...
What was that film where Meg Ryan played a prostitute? I believe it was with George C. Scott?
3 come to mind: (1) Russel Crowe & Kim Basinger in LA Confidential, (2) Al Pacino & Ellen Barkin in Sea of Love, (3) Nic Cage & Bridget Fonda in It Could Happen To You.They're genuine, real, memorable. The characters have chemistry as the teens would say it. And the babes are hot.
And how did you like Kim in the Getaway? She turned out to be a pretty good shot...
I recall she had some real nice scenes in Getaway. She's also cool in the Real McCoy.
"Chinatown," "Blue Velvet," "Body Heat," and a Pink Panther comedy: "A Shot In The Dark." "Silence Of The Lambs" reverses the protection roles. I guess DeNiro tried to protect Jodie in "Taxi Driver," too.I would've mentioned "The Bodyguard" with Kevin Costner first, but I didn't like it. And if I hear Whitney belt out and butcher that @#&*%! song one more time...
Ugliest guy protecting the babe: Charles Bronson protecting Jill Ireland's First Lady.
Hong Kong films have featured Jet Li and Jackie Chan several times in formulaic "protector" roles.
Then there are all those secret agent films (James Bond didn't do too good a job protecting most of his lovers, as they ended up dead by film's end).
The (original) Thomas Crown affair
Of course. :-D

Boggie or Robert? I presume you mean the classic, but Mitchum (1978) is one of my favorite actors too. And I LOVE Sarah Miles...
Yeah, the classic. I'm a big fan of Hawks' films.I also like Mitchum, but I *really* like him in roles where he plays a crazed bad guy as he does in "Night of the Hunter" and "Cape Fear".
Every time I think about that film I get that nasty taste in my mouth. Is it because of Mitchum's performance that the effect is far more pronounced than that of the cardboard cutout De Niro's?
I think you're probably right. Mitchum very subtly manages to convey that he knows what he's doing is wrong in his villainous performances. Instead of cold-bloodedness, he gives the viewer the warmth of rotting character.
Hi,
i like most anything Mitchum is in, but i have never watched the whole of that film. You got it right, it's nasty.
A prerelease version from 1945 which was longer than the one which was finally edited to feature more of Bacall in '46. The first version is longer and more cohesive; the second features more chemistry between Bogart and Bacall. Both versions are on the DVD.AuPh

***I would've mentioned "The Bodyguard" with Kevin Costner first, but I didn't like it. And if I hear Whitney belt out and butcher that @#&*%! song one more time...Well, that was one hell of a stinker... hard to be more ridiculous than this movie. Some chiche movies at least have something to attract your attention...
***Ugliest guy protecting the babe: Charles Bronson protecting Jill Ireland's First Lady. When it comes to this couple, I feel sad. She died way too early, and she was exceedingly beautiful. Not to everyone's taste, I know.
What was the name of that flick where she sends him a kiss and he shoots her right through the kissing lips? Well, almost. Still - what was it? Not quite a "protective male".
And I can't forget her with Anthony Perkins... I don't know about you, but both my wife and I had soft spots for her. And he sort of took on some of her charm. When she was gone he was a motherless child... still is.
***Hong Kong films have featured Jet Li and Jackie Chan several times in formulaic "protector" roles.Yeah, but too much bang-bang. I sort of love soft touch...
***Then there are all those secret agent films (James Bond didn't do too good a job protecting most of his lovers, as they ended up dead by film's end).
Just as well...
> > What was the name of that flick where she sends him a kiss and he shoots her right through the kissing lips? < <Sorry, I don't recall seeing that one. My favorite Bronson/Ireland film was "From Noon Til Three", a Western comedy of how a short encounter spawns a romantic legend. Worth a rental.
It might have been the Mechanic. In the final scene she is in the glass elevator, and he is aiming the rifle at her. But my memory is not too good on this one.
How about "North by Northwest"? A fantastic dvd release.BTW, I just picked up the remastered Jolene. If all you've ever heard is Whiney Houston caterwaul her way through "I Will Always Love You" Ms Parton's original will crush your heart.
Agreed, Dolly Parton's version of her own song is the best. Linda Ronstadt also tried belting it out to lesser effect.
This could be a stretch but what about Superman with Chris Reeve and Margot Kidder.
"How To Steal a Million" is a great film. Too bad it's not on DVD
As for recent ones I've ejoyed "LA Confidential".
But of course the ultimate and greatest of them all is a "Naked Gun"
Not sure if these qualify, but boy were they good. Stallone's tha man! (Tongue planted firmly in cheek -- these movies really stunk).
They stunk, but we should simply put them in that "Guilty Pleasures" category. I saw the Cobra more than once... more than five times, actually...

"Fair Game" starring William Baldwin and Cindy Crawford. The script is so bad they had to make time to schedule two seperate shower scenes for Crawford. You can also watch former Playmate/Baywatch lifeguard Erika Eleniak jiggle through "Chasers", a really bad rip-off of "The Last Detail".
A good movie that has a bit of a twist on this theme is "Heaven Knows, Mr Allison" starring Robert Mitchum as a US Marine stranded on an island in the Pacific with a Nun (Deborah Kerr) in WWII. Directed by John Huston.
***A good movie that has a bit of a twist on this theme is "Heaven Knows, Mr Allison" starring Robert Mitchum as a US Marine stranded on an island in the Pacific with a Nun (Deborah Kerr) in WWII. Directed by John Huston.Don't recall that one, and it sounds fine - good actors. Marine - that's close enough to cop... me think...
Do you think the African Queen would qualify too?
Hi again,
you should. Father Goose is a favorite of mine.
.
Hi Victor,
it's a minor classic, i hope you enjoy it.
Hmmmm. I might call African Queen more of an opposites-attract picture than a damsel in distress type. In many ways Hepburn is saving Bogie in this one (the scene where she pours all of his gin overboard is classic). A similar movie would be "Father Goose" with Cary Grant and Leslie Caron.
Jeez, I almost forgot "Terminator"! Linda Hamilton falls for human freedom fighter from the future. Ah-nold rules!
One of my favourites (remember, Victor, we don't always agree on these matters ;-) but anyway: The Witness by Peter Weir starring Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.Best,
Thom
You are right, and Witness is not to high on my list. Bot how about another Ford's film, he is a cop there, alright, and Scott Thomas is quite good... Forgot the title for now, but I am sure you know what I am talking about.
That's it. If you are Scott Thomas fan, you must see it. Otherwise it is just a somewhat below average formulaic flick.

I'll give you one -- but it's really got the roles reversed and I loved it. In fact, the lead IS a cop and IS a babe."Out of Sight" stars Jennifer Lopez (yes...yes) and (believe it or not) George Clooney. Based on an Elmore Leonard novel I thought it was fantastic.
Doug Schneider
...and not a bad film.
