If you are not familiar with Polanski's work in general that would be the obvious way to go (Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown, Bitter Moon, Death and the Maiden to name a few that pop into mind).
Alan Parker's Angel Heart also has this eerie athmosphere to it.
David Koepp's Stir of Echoes is a smaller scale but still effective supernatural thriller.
