I got a copy of this based on some promotional raves, but I am not sure that I have watched the whole thing. The case lists a running time of 83 min., but the feature only ran for approx. 43 min. and the story abruptly ends without providing many answers or insights. Did I see the whole thing? Is there an "Easter Egg" or something more obvious that I missed to get to a second half of the story? The plot seems like a combination of "Buffy, The Vampire Slayer" with "Vampire Hunter D", but seems too simple and enigmatic for a feature-length film. Clearly an exercise in style-over-substance.
As for the animation quality, it is not your usual Japanese anime. The backgrounds use sophisticated 3-D CGI extensively and light and shadow are major elements to the film's "look". The characters are drawn more Westernized or European than usual, reminding me of Ralph Bakshi's work, but they look too simple and two-dimensional compared to the 3-D background.

Okay, my copy landed today. No, you saw it all the other 43 min is the "making of" program... looks to be based on a novel and will probably have sequals. Well, they did tone down the CGI a bit... better than most but I'm still not real fond of the starkness of CGI in contrast with the 2d (hey, I know the computer freaks love to show off what they can do, but the result is just too perfect and sterile at the same time... sort of like if the Mona Lisa's face had been painted on a photograph instead of being done entirely in oil). Serial Experiment Lain (4 dvd set) is quite stark in places but in an entirely different way that blends with the other visual elements (but isn't 3d CGI either). There were a lot of gorgeous scenes and I liked it overall, but the way they drew people's lips drove me nuts.
I really tend to hate 3d cgi in anime.... sort of okay if used sparingly like in Cowboy Beebop when a ship comes out of one of the transit gates. More than that and the contrast is just too glaring, like they're showing off (gee, looky what I can do with a puter and a ray-trace program). As for Blood, haven't seen it yet, but it strikes me as being one of those over-hyped things... I'll stick with Vampire Princess Miyu and Nightwalkers. (^-^)
