...which is in NY (they are all from a NYC suburb), but does it really matter where they graduated from or where they grew up? I am not in Ohio nor Michigan, and don't support any of their sports teams, but why does it seem that OSU people have such large egos?

Not ego, PRIDE. Reason: the East Coast and West Coast ignore everything in the middle of the country (until they get stuck in O'Hare in winter). People here are desperate for recognition that something good came from here or happened here (as for beating Michigan in football, well...).
