In Reply to: Why did Jean Arthur stop her acting career so early? posted by Victor Khomenko on October 05, 1999 at 06:10:18:
Stage fright is what I've heard or read somewhere. Actually retired in the mid-forties although she did make a couple of more films after she retired, her last being Shane(1953). Stage fright as the reason is a little difficult for me to swallow; surely there's more to it than that. Hope you'll post whatever you find out. She's one of my favorite actresses. A few recommended Jean Arthur films: You Can't Take It with You, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, The Talk of the Town, Only Angels Have Wings, The More the Merrier, The Devil and Miss Jones, A Foreign Affair, Shane. She made some good ones!
Sort of hard to believe, but strange things DO happen to people. People change. She certainly had good star qualities, somethng that you don't often see.***She's one of my favorite actresses.
Same here, I keep her in the same category as another old timer - Barbara Stanwyck.

Yes, that is a good list. I saw some of them and will definitely rent the others.
