That's O Brother Where Art Thou. And oh brother does it evince, in nearly every scene, the heavy handedness of the freres Coen. Guess they just can't help making fun, through caricature rather than character, of people they consider inferior to their brilliant selves -- in this case, Southerners. (Contrast their work to almost any Robert Altman film.) In defense of the movie, I will say that most of the actors rose above the script and George Clooney's mugging was amusing. On the other hand every syllable of dialog was ADRed and that added (as usual) to the artificiality of the entire enterprise.Wish we could have heard more Ralph Stanley! But I managed to take a lesson from the twice-heard "Look on the Sunny Side of Life".

Let me guess, you're a Southener?
"Guess they just can't help making fun, through caricature rather than character, of people they consider inferior to their brilliant selves -- in this case, Southerners. "But they do this to everyone, so it's not like they're bigoted.
Raising Arizona: Southwesterners
Hudsucker Proxy: American corporate managers/50's urbanites
Fargo: Northwesterners
Big Lebowski: People from L.A. - all of them.I don't think they're so much trying to make fun of these people for the sake of distinguishing their own brilliance, I believe it's just that they've discovered that you can tell a better story with extremely eccentric characters. Where eccentricities define the character and dictate a character's actions. Sure, it turns them into caricatures of real people and real cultures . . . but you wind up with a fun story.
When you read dilbert, do you complain that it's just another example of Scott Adams making fun of people he considers inferior to his brilliant self . . in this case, Human Resource personel? No, because his caricatures are funny .. and tell a good story.
Clark m'boy, how can you criticize a movie which contains that side-splitting Wizard of Oz/Busby Berkley depiction of Klansmen? FWIW, I thought the movie was hysterically funny from start to finish and the best Coen Brother's film to date! The brilliant reworking of Homer's The Odyssey into a hayseed flick is pure genius and it succeeds on every level! For some like yourself, it may take more than one viewing to fully appreciate the artistry and wit of this film, so I'd recommend giving it another viewing before rendering judgment.AuPh
The only two scenes shot in L.A. (as opposed to Mississippi) were the scene where the car drives out of the barn as the paddy wagon full of ammo blows up and the Klan rally. About two weeks before the Klan scene was filmed I lost a bet with a freind of mine who was in the Art Dept. on that film and I had to play a dancing Klansman in the (look at the center of the Klan rally and you'll see six of us arm in arm doing a kick dance--one of 'em is me!). I got to be a dancing extra for four cold nights in October at the Disney Ranch , which is about 50 miles north of LA in the hills. Horrible experience, but at least they paid me $150/day (which I donated to charity).I think you're way off the mark about the boys making fun of people. Most of thier films are FUNNY and SMART. And the two that aren't funny (Blood Simple and Miller's Crossing) are chilling crime dramas.
"I'm a Dapper Dan man. I don't use FOP!"
Kills me every time.
I'll check out that scene again on my "O Brother..." DVD. BTW, I'm assuming that the last comment about being *way off mark* was intended for Clark, because you and I seem to be in complete agreement about the Coen Brother's films. FWIW, I consider all of their dramas & comedies brilliant, creative and refreshingly atypical filmfare.Cheers,

Hi Auph,
remember the cereal commercial character Mikey? Nuff said. I can't wait to buy the dvd. I have seen it twice now, and am looking forward to #3. There are a few items I find discordant, but that seems
to be a Coen Bros trait. First time I saw that KKK formation drill it raised the hair on the back of my head. If those lunatics ever got that organised, there'd be hell to pay.
