I've mentioned a some of mine in previous messages-Jack Palance in Shane, Daniel Auteuil in Manon of the Spring, Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet, Robert Mitchum in Night of the Hunter. A few more I like are Ricardo Montalban in Star Trek:The Wrath of Khan, Tim Roth in Rob Roy(despised that prissy swordslinger), Basil Rathbone in just about anything, Raymond Massey in The Scarlet Pimpernel(great old movie with Leslie Howard turning in one of my favorite performances of all-time as Sir Percival Blakeney).Who are some of your memorable villains?
Jack Palance, yes, anyone remember him as the evil wizard Simon in Paul Newman's first movie? Not yet mentioned: Orson Welles, Harry Lime, primarily, but others. How about Sydney Greenstreet, both Maltese Falcon and Casablanca?
Anyone see Henry Fonda in the spaghetti western "Once upon a time in the west"?
..
He does play slimy, sleazy characters well. Saw him recently in Another Day in Paradise where he turned in a thoroughly repulsive performance(praise) in a thoroughly repulsive movie(not praise).
These are perennial movie villains, but my top prize goes to Walken, for his role in "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead": "I say buckwheats for all of them!"My top prize for female villains goes to Angela Lansbury as the mother from hell in "The Manchurian Candidate". Also, I'd like a special mention for Julia Roberts as the villain in "My Best Friend's Wedding". I usually have to point out the evil things she does to try to stop a wedding, because most people succumb to her charms. By comparison, Al Pacino in "The Devil's Advocate" was quite subtle.
Christopher Walken, Malcolm McDowellThose are both good villians :-)
What's the guy's name that played the leader of the terrorists in one of the Die Hards (II I think)? He was also the bad guy in Quigley Down Under. My memory for names is really beginning to fade, but this guy has always played a most excellent villian.
Alan Rickman and you're right, he does play villains well.
Didn't Rickman play an unsavory character in Costner's "Robin Hood"?
He played the Sheriff of Nottingham and was the highlight of a movie that disappointed me greatly. I've developed a strong dislike of Costner's acting.
Costner was not charismatic enough for that role; Errol Flynn was; Costner
should have known better, but his big overambitious ego blinded him. I'm
not completely anti-Costner, enjoyed him as Elliott Ness in "The Untouchables"; his laid-back acting style fit the Ness part very
well; the stiff-acting Robert Stack did OK way back when in the TV series.
Can't speak for the rest of his films as I haven't seen or wanted to see
them. - AH
Peter Lorre as Joel Cairo (Maltese Falcon)
Sidney Greenstreet as Casper Gutman (Maltese Falcon)
Vincent Price (especially Dr. Phibes)
Lee Van Cleef - everything he's in
Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal LectorBruce Dern in "Cowboys"
the guy who played the King in "BraveHeart"
the sleazy guy (Winslet's fiance) in "Titantic"
Robert Mitchum in anything he played the bad guy in.
nt
It suddenly hit me the other day how much I despised the slimy, replusive
creep, Barry Convex (played by Les Carlson) in David Cronenberg's bizarre
1983 film, "Videodrome". - AH
that's all.
