Cricket has a reputation of being the slowest, most boring sport in existence. But it can't be as boring as reading a death spiral about "Lost In Space" vs. "Star Trek."And it isn't boring in "Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India", a minor miracle given the film's near four-hour length. I am not very familiar with Indian cinema beyond Satyajit Ray and Mira Nair, and would have missed this film when a friend told me it had the usual singing and dancing numbers. But "Lagaan" (= tax), loosely based on true events of an Indian village challenging their Victorian oppressors to an all-or-nothing cricket match, has song and dance numbers that support the story well. More than that, it incorporates every single baseball film cliche I can remember to make for a thrilling match. There is also a secondary story of interracial love that is unusual. And the soundtrack CD has some incredible drum sound, particularly on the "Chale Chalo" track (the equivalent of the "Gonna Fly Now" training song number in "Rocky" films).
If inmates can direct me to other worthy Indian films, I'm all eyes and ears.
And now back to our "Fireball XL5" vs. "Stingray" SuperMarionation Trivia Nerdathon.
Follow Ups:
This movie was highly enjoyable on DVD. You don't even have to be Indian or know cricket to enjoy this movie. I thought it was way better than 'A Beautiful Mind' and the other movies lined up for Oscar. Heard this movie is up for the best foreign film nomination at the academy awards. I personally hope it wins.Oher Indian movies that I was recommended by my Indian friends are 'Roja', 'Dil Chahtha Hai', 'Bombay', 'Sholay', 'Aks', 'Monsoon Wedding'. I've seen 'Dil Chahtha Hai' and 'Aks' and thought they both were pretty good as well, though not as good as 'Lagaan'.
My wife (a journalist covering India) took me to see Lagaan. I don't know anything about cricket -- and just about croaked when I found out that it was 4 hours long -- but really enjoyed it. Rumor has it that it is out on DVD, but I have not seen it in the stores here.

You may have seen the first 2 part of the trilogy FIRE and EARTH (1947). Both are pretty good.

Not a big fan of Bollywood, the only cinema release I've seen from India was Bandit Queen, the story of Phoolan Devi. No singing or dancing in this one.A grim story about the abuse of a low caste-woman and her subsequent life of crime in India. It's a true story, I think after her release from prison she went on to be a member of parliament and was murdered recently.
And the acting was better in Thunderbirds than in Star Trek.
(This forum needs some livening up)
How can mere plastic induce so much 'wood'?What the heck was Thunderbird 3 good for? I mean, it gets launched into outer space and that was pretty much it. And what does "FAB" mean?
I think it was called "Oh, Parker" (it was a duet, the next line was Parker responding with "Yes, m'lady ?".The memory of that tune still haunts me now.
I think FAB was a psuedo- acronym, it was just an abbreviation of "fabulous", ie fab- a 60's UK hip, swinging, Carnaby St. kind of thing to say.
