Hey folks,What are your top 5 suggestions for DVDs to give to friends and family for the holidays? I know that gifts like this are dependent on who you're giving them to, but I'm wondering if you can think of some fantastic movies in general that would be good for someone who is intelligent, but not a film buff.
We're buying my dad a DVD player this year and are trying to think of good dvds to buy him. He REALLY liked "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" and he likes 'The Freshman' and "The Emerald Forest" and "Miami Blues" - and has these on video. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Follow Ups:
If you want the movie about gladiators, get Spartacus.
Few others:
Amadeus - just a great movie.
Big Lebovski - if he likes "O brother..." chances are he will like this one. Made by the same guys.
Shrek - you got to like Shrek.
Buena Vista Social Club
Crumb
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Tremors
ShrekOther candidates:
Thunderheart (my dad is a big Fred Ward fan, go figure)
Big Lebowski (although I don't know about this one - it's pretty different from Oh Brother and people either love it or hate it. I own it and love it, but . . .)
Thick as Thieves (I'll probably just keep this one for myself)
Dr. Strangelove
The Adventures of Buckaro Bonzai with Fred Ward and Joel Gray.
If you can find it- it's a gem !!!
I actually have it on tape. Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow, Peter Weller, Clancy Brown, Christopher Lloyd . . great cast. But you have to admit - this is a WEIRD movie. Rasta aliens, 8th dimensional freak-outs, etc.
Although, come to think of it, I don't think Fred Ward is in this one. Yeah, maybe you're thinking of Remo Williams.
NT
Manhattan (Woody Allen)
The Insider (Michael Mann)
American Beauty (Sam Mendes)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Milos Forman)IMO all are great films, and easy to appreciate.
Best,
Thom
The first that occurred to me was "The Stunt Man" that's just out on DVD. "Ghost Dog" is good. "Bamboozled" has held up after multiple viewings. For laughs consider "Mitchell" from the Rhino Video MST3K series but I don't think it's on disc yet. My dad liked "The 'Burbs".
Hi,
I often mention 'The Buena Vista Social CLub' here; I got my copy from a sale bin for $10. Trust me on this one. I picked up 'O Brother...' on dvd, since you already know he likes it, that might be a good choice. Much depends on what he likes, which I am unsure about.
At least one dvd showoff disc would be good, Braveheart,Jurassic park,Gladiator; there are several.
By the way, I picked up Ry Cooder's Chicken Skin Music on vinyl last weekend and it's great. Authentic Hawaiian mixed with country mixed with old blues and all with great recording quality. It's great that he tries to expose people to new and forgotten forms of music.
Braveheart,Jurassic park,Gladiator - good rec's as well!
