Saw the new movie on Friday night. It was entertaining and moved very quickly. In some smaller roles Carl Reiner, Andy Garcia and E. Gould were all quite good. Movie did seem a bit too "tame", almost no bad language at all which would seem somewhat strange for ex-cons and criminal types. All-in-all worth seeing, on my personal scale of 100 being the best movie I would rate it a 78. Don't remember the original so I am not able to compare them. There were some interesting twists and turns and some great tricks to pull the heist. One thing that always bothers me about these big "cash heist" movies is they are supposed to be stealing $160 million in cash and they have about 7 guys carrying this out in large bags. ONE million in cash in hundred dollar bills would fit into a normal sized suitcase (not an attache case) and weighs approx. 35 pounds. $160 million would weigh 5,600 lbs. and would not be able to be carried out by 7 guys slung over their shoulders (that's about 800 lbs. each !!). You would think that someone would pay more attention to stuff like this.
Follow Ups:
Weight of the cash is but the start of the things that would be hard to believe if you start thinking this way. What about the machine in the back of the van (will not say what it does for those who have not seen it). The whole thing is quite preposterous. Yet great fun. The arc of this type of movie is completely predictable- assemble a team, present an impossible plan, then execute in intricate detail. Throw in some unexpected obstacles. I thought it was great.
Tunenut, this device is not as crazy as you might think. Check outhttp://www.abovetopsecret.com/pages/ebomb.html
probably more realistic than 7 guys carrying out $160 million in cash over their shoulders !! There are not too many guys around that can carry 800 pounds and just walk out of the casino !
Ocean's Eleven is pretty darn good...but for those who like Soderbergh's work, Out of Sight is significantly better.Doug Schneider
The critics loved Out of Sight for some reason. I found it trite and boring. Not a fan of that skank J Lo either.
I loved it because it was a bouncy, catchy story that just rocketed along. It was the first movie that I'd seen in a long time that I could have sat through immediately a second time again.Doug Schneider
You are so right about the sheer physical size and weight of money! I only ever saw this mentioned in one movie back in the 70's and they were stealing like 25 million but they actually worked out the number of men it would take to carry it away. I don't remember the name but the facts stuck with me.Thanks for the review, the movie is on my list of must-see
