I don't care what the critics say, it is not his best film, or, a very good film at all(and I love his work). Lynch tends to roll out references to all his past weird cliche's with a tongue-in-cheek style for all of us film geeks, but at the base of it all, there really isn't much of a storyline. And there is some pretty bad acting acting sprinkled throughout in a John Waters "isn't this hip" kind of way.The film is also poorly edited in rough, jerky, way. It seems to me like quite a bit was left on the cutting room floor, which leaves it slightly confusing. Hours after you've left the film, it is possible to connect the dots, but it's more of an annoyance having to do so unlike "Memento" which was a welcomed challenged. Part of this is a result of certain storylines which are left hanging as the film moves on.
Most of all, the fil is waaay too long.
Follow Ups:
and so, what the hell happened? My best guess is that the young man in the cafe was describing either a waking halucination or a dream to his therapist, and the movie follows the dream. Other than this speculation, I have no idea what I saw. But, I didnt like Blue Velvet. I loved the straight story, though.
Can anyone take a stab at who the guy operating the levers is in Eraserhead, and what planet is he on???????????? :~)Merry Christmas

I'd say he was the Great Mechanic, Turner of the Wheel of Time in this dream world...?
Unless the dream world was even more decrepit than Henry's world?Cheers

so we don't ruin it for others.
Hey DarkI would like to hear what you have to say as well.
I rather enjoyed the movie, and like others have said, it is not often that a movie will evoke any thought at all these days. Was it death vision?
Was it dream vision?
Whose?E-mail with your read.

That's a shame. I've been expecting quite a bit from this one, especially after 'Lost Highway' which in Rob's book of good movies was a very good movie.Besides, Lynch likes Rammstein.

... and make up your mind about it. I disagree with what darkmoebius says about the film. I think it's a masterpiece, right up there with Blue Velvet. The man has evolved, and I think his path through Lost Highway and Straight Story was meant to land smack on Mulholland Drive. I loved puzzling about it afterwards and discussing it with friends, something Memento failed to do. I still don't think we have it all straight, but I think we're close!
I'm a big fan of Lynch's better films and such high hopes for it following all the glowing reviews. "Blue Velvet" was surreal, sensual, dangerous, and thrilling at the same time. All of those factors worked together seamlessly to create a cinematic atmosphere that had never been seen before. "Mullholland" has flashes of that, but the rest doesn't seem to jell. It's not a horrible film, just unnecessarily long and unfocused. It will leave you thinking for hours(or days)afterwards. In fact, it takes a while to put all the pieces together in order to figure out what really happened.
I guess a good summation would be that I really don't know whether to recommend the film to friends or not, it could go either way. Unlike "Blue Velvet", which I knew I could remcommend to everyone.
Well dark one, I will go for it as soon as it's in the cinema here. It has been a long time I could think for days about a movie, which to me usually is a good sign:-)Thanks,
Rob
It's long, but the more I discuss it with others, the better it gets.
