I think we'll see a domestic release of this film soon. I've seen the trailers in the local art houses, though I guess that isn't always a guarantee.Oh, I just checked IMDB, which shows a Jan 11 limited and Jan 25 wide release.
Here in the US we only get the small, very small, portion of what is produced elsewhere. While I would not mind expanding that portion some, it surely keeps the crap away. Most of the foreign stuff that makes it here has at least some merit, creating that impression that the French Italian and German guys can do no wrong.I actually would like for some "thinking" movie critic - someone like Michael Medved, not that Ebert idiot - to run a comparisson between different modern movie cultures.
Since you guys are right there, would you care to comment on the percentage of good films produced by the European movie industries these days? Here it is no more than about 2%, so I don't even recall the last time I paid to see a local movie.So, what's your take?
The problem is , actually,what is a good film,for you, and others..
After the mondialisation a la Hollywood sirup there is lesser than less left,as the people like the same...every where,and one, must be said ,than even the most detestable film from th U.S industry is always very professional and that I admire...so what is a good film...Hitch = 90 % of his work is genial,the same with Bergman as with Bunuel,Chaplin of course,not forgetting, the Russians,the Italians,the Spanish,and of course the French...and the John Ford ( Maupassant-like)John Huston,....and little marvel like Hannah & her sister..

I agree with you 100% on the level of professionalism... one could also call it "consistency"... like at a good factory. That makes it even more unfortunate - as the infrastructure is there, but now used for purpose other than art.

and what make me do the same ???What is good for me? I would tend to treat movie art like any other art - which is to say that primitive art is still art, but well-polished fake is worthless.
The problem with modern American films can be many-fold, but perhaps the bigest one is that of a junkie nature. Like in junkie's like, where true and natural life's pleasures are being replaced with their stronger substitute, same has happened with the US films. That cycle started about 40 years ago, and I see to signs of recovery. So each new film is just the old one with more effect and more bizzarre stuff, and less and less real substance. And once you start on that slope there is no hope, I am afraid. So only those directors who are either completely protected from any financial need, or those so dedicated to art they really don't care, can produce things worth watching in today's environment. They account for that remaining 2%. As a rule, these are never commercial successes.
B.Levinson some time brings out small but fine pictures..and others,of course.as does some English..like Leight.
In my scala Litterature rate higher than films..but that is another story...
And the Germans...Murnau,F.Lang..Mmmm...think of " M "...
No, don't even think of M. How much revenue do you think it would produce today? Yet some of the most gripping horror scenes there... with no action and no words. No red paint and no plastic guts.
Masterfully played and filmed and a social critic and allegory of his times.

So back to the question, it was the Grinch,as his author made some dark film like Batman , the first, I did not managed to go to the end...so bad was it.
Well, I've been very disappointed with recent french movies which, for the most part, have tried to play the 'we-must-have-a-hit-in-the-usa' and so you end up with very superficial & pretty (Pacte des Loups), or superficial & stoopid (Taxi 1,2 etc)movies that the director hopes will be copied by Hollywood for big dollars. I don't think the fact that Messier of Vivendi has bought into Universal is going to help any. I'd probably give a slightly higher percentage of good european films than you, as we have a better access to them here but...I think the up-coming new cinema is from Taiwan (Millenium Mambo)and Hong Kong.
Superficial & pretty aply, for my taste more for " les Rivieres Pourpres" than for " le Pacte.." who is plainly stupid..
I have the certain feeling ,that they is no more need ,for Hollywood to "copy " the French films as they are now able for themself to copy...Them.
