Recently saw part of the 1988 horror film, "American Gothic"; a friend had
rented it from a video store. It features Rod Steiger, Yvonne de Carlo and
Michael J. Pollard; they are part of a psycho family who live on an unknown
island off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. Three couples land on the
island and crazy things start to happen. If you want a good laugh, watch
this movie; this family makes The Addams Family look normal! There is
one particular scene where I simply cracked up: the one where Pa (Steiger)
beats one of his physically grown, but psychoemotionally stunted sons with
a large stick for a wrongdoing. The whole duration of the beating, which
lasts quite a while, Pa is saying over and over, "In the Name of God!",
"In the Name of God!"; the rest of the family is standing on the porch
watching and they are also chanting, "In the Name of God!". Will have to be
seen to be believed. Then there's also the moonfaced Michael J. Pollard
standing there with a big silly grin. Movie critic, Leonard Maltin
rated this film DA BOMB! In a way this movie reminded me of the low-budget
horror that came out in the mid-60's: "10,000 Maniacs", which toured the
drive-ins with "Blood Feast". I read the reviews on "American Gothic" at
the IMDB site and it garnered a 3.6 rating out of a possible 10;
some viewers loved this movie and thought it was great. If
you are tired of high-quality, but serious films and are in need of some
comic relief, "American Gothic" is a winner. BTW, has anyone ever seen
"10,000 Maniacs"? - AH
