I did a search here and saw this movie had evoked varying responses from inmates and read a thumbs down review from Leonard Maltin (for what that is worth).Personally I was gobsmacked. At times it is too hyperkinetic as Maltin says but the overall impact was "WOW". I must admit to a (snobbish?) bias against Australian movies as most are pretty ordinary IMO, but hats off to those who made this one. As for Nicole Kidman, she can dance for me anytime she likes :-))
And the soundtrack is something again.
IMO this is a movie to be seen several times to fully appreciate its many nuances. I only hope the hyperkinetic side of it does not wear too thin.

Follow Ups:
We paid 2 bucks/each to see it (And the beer was VERY GOOD).(Very Cool to have a brewpub/restaurant/filmhouse in Anchorage Alaska).
Nicole Kidman couldn't save this film on her own - OK for a music
video - but stetching it to 90+ minutes made it VERY tiresome. If you want a film to have story and acting as vital components,
then you should look elsewhere
I thought the movie was a mishmash of stolen cliches. It was a treat for the eyes and the music was generally well done BUT it took me a week to be able to sit through the whole thing. The whole thing reminded me of a hybrid of "Cabaret" and a Batman flick (take your pick, they're all bad). For me, the movie is a big steaming heap. If you dig it, more power to you. To quote that great philosopher Sly Stone, "Different strokes for different folks."
I guess the movie was meant to be clever but I just felt assaulted.
Too bad some of the tons of money they put into the movie wasn't spent on a good script. The script of Moulin Rouge was as bad as that for Pearl Harbor! And I thought that had set a new standard for lousy.
Kidman isn't much as a musical performer but she is so beautiful I almost don't care. Notice I said "almost."
Cast my vote for Moulin Rouge being the WORST of 2001.
I watched MR the other night for the first time as well on the big screen, with pre-conceived negative notions and predudices, which were put to rest in a big way as I was taking the whole experience in! This film was, in my opinion, a grand cinematic work of art, and a total joy to watch! It definitely has a different feel to it because it IS different! BUT the acting is SPECTACULAR, and the allusion to retro music hits just phenomenal! The use of past hits totally works in this wonderful and colorful movie, and I was totally moved with how the story unfolded and especially, how it ended. This movie is best enjoyed with a loved one/significant other! This movie absolutely stands on it's own in a big way, and the acting is first rate! Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman are stunning!
Do NOT miss this gem!
P.S. Maltin doesn't know his ass from his elbow half the time anyway!
Proof postitive that "art is in the eye of the beholder"
I saw this for the first time two days ago. Moulin Rouge is such a clear example of a polar film, this will either attract or dispell people, a viewer never comes away indifferent. Five of us saw it; three loved it, two hated it.
Wierd for wierd's sake. This movie was like a 60's acid trip. I personally found it difficult to follow and disjointed. A huge thumb's down in my book. However, I do agree with the Nicole Kidman comment!
