I have a group of western lovers coming over Friday night, and I get to pick one to show. I selected "Once Upon a Time in the West" because IMO it is one of the top 3 of all time, and none of the folks (all under 30) has seen it. I'm an old cogger who was in his sophomore year in college when it was release and thought it's time to let these guys see a classic. Any thought(s) for a second reel (guess we call them video tapes now)? Of course since OUATITW is 165 minutes long, it would take many reels.
Check out "The Searchers" with John Wayne and directed by John Ford. Also, I like "Shane" a lot. A movie like "once upon a time in the west" is most impressive on the big screen. My favorite line is at the beginning when Bronson asks the bad guys if they brought a horse for him. They look around and say it looks like they are short one horse. He responds that they have one horse too many.
Well,I hope your western fest went well. I didnt see this post 'till
just now (have been on vacation). Next time you have one, try
The Wild Bunch - imo the best ever by far; for something almost as
good but in a *much* lighter vein, try The Ballad of Cable Hogue.
Both of these by Sam Peckinpah, by the way. Others I like are:
Missouri Breaks (Nicholson and Brando), and Goin' South (Nicholson).

May I recommend a western comedy as a dessert: "Rustler's Rhapsody". The humor is not as broad as "Blazing Saddles", but I prefer its skewed and perverse vision of the genre.
