Why is it that Hollywood always shows the best clips of a movie as its previews (i.e., "Meet the Parents")? They got me on this one cuz I thought it would be decent but it sucked. Kate Hudson must be taking acting lessons from her Mom, and the rest of the cast was second-rate, at best. I'm glad I didn't shell out $8 to see it on the big screen.Even the soundtrack wasn't cool enough to keep me awake. Oh well, at least I got a much needed nap.

Follow Ups:
I caught the tail end of the 70s, so if you're thinking I couldn't relate to the movie because I didn't experience the decade, well...you're right in the sense that I didn't really experience the decade, especially its music. That probably explains why I couldn't relate to the soundtrack except for the Zeppelin, Skynyrd and Allman Brothers tunes. My reasons for not enjoying the movie had nothing to do with the time period in which it took place. In comparison, Schindler's List stands as one of my all-time favorite movies, and when did it take place?. (Is that Veektoor I hear screaming?)I just felt the movie lacked any real substance in all aspects - acting, character development, plot, etc. For example, one minute, William's Mother is an overbearing witch...the next minute, an understanding angel. What gives? Also, I couldn't hold back my laughter at Wiliam's "amazing" acting ability when he finally stands up for Penny and proclaims his love for her. Perhaps he could contact Anna Pacquin for a few lessons.
If the movie would've avoided these pitfalls, it probably would stand as one of the better movies I've seen in 2001. Personally, I would've also added some Dylan, more Skynyrd, CSNY and maybe even some Heart to the soundtrack. ;-)
My $.02 anyway.

The faults with this movie lie solely at the feet of the director and because of that it's self-indulgent and masturbatory. Crowe is such a total light-weight his capacity should have been as second unit director and maybe advisor and only if he was on a very short chain in the hands of the person who should have directed this movie: Chet Flippo. Read "On the Road with The Rolling Stones" and you'll see how good this movie could have been. The only thing "Almost Famous" did for me was answer the question, "What type of groupie would a band like Kansas attract?". As soon as it was over I watched "Velvet Goldmine". It took away the pain.
The Gladiator
Castaway = great potential, HORRIBLE execution!
These are supposed to be the best movies of last year???!!!
...avoid Vanilla Sky, easily CC's worse film ever. Not helped by the always wooden Tom Cruise and his second rate squeeze Penelope Cruz.
Agree with you on Almost Famous, what was the fuss all about ?
cheerio
Tom Cruise can be outstanding. See Born on the Fourth of July.To each their own on Penelope Cruz. I think she's fabulous.

I must disagree. ALMOST FAMOUS is probably the best movie I have seen in the past year. I loved it...story, acting, etc. Can't wait to see the newly released "director's cut".
Me, too. I think this easily the best film of that year (and yes, I saw practically everything that year). It just doesn't get old for me. I've seen the original and the director's cut many times now and just love it every time. YMMV, as usual! If you're a fan, run, don't walk, and get the director's cut DVD. The extra footage adds an extra dimension to the characters' relationships but IMO doesn't take anything away from the film. The original cut is also in the package, so feel free to sell off the previous release, or better yet, give it to someone who hasn't seen the film yet.
Oh, I'm 34, and was never into 70s music, having grown up with U2, the Cure, Smiths, Echo, etc. And yet I still love this film, so it's not because of the nostalgia.
I have to disagree with you! I thought it was a great movie and the music was great too. What exactly were you expecting from this movie anyhow?

> > What exactly were you expecting from this movie anyhow? < <Actually, that's the sad thing...I went into this movie w/o high expectations and they were still not met. Perhaps, I expected more from Crowe or something similar in quality to "The Doors". But in the end, I thought the acting was flat... the plot was unrealistic...the characters shallow...the music predictable...and McDormand grossly underutilized. FWIW, my wife agrees with you. ;-)

How so?

Well I guess it brought back great memories of the time. I could relate to a lot of the things that happened in this movie. The drugs, jumping off a roof into the pool, the dizzy chicks. I guess I just forgot about the acting and enjoyed the movie.
Take care,>

Sentimental bunch, aren't we? :)
