Just saw the film, although it has been out for 3 months in a very limited release. The film is absolutley brilliant! The best description I can think of is "American Beauty" but darker and more surreal. Better yet, cross AB with "Mulholland Drive", "Pi", and "Memento" and that is a close approximation of what's going on. Although, the storyline is more coherent than any of the others, excluding "American Beauty".It is a deeply affecting movie on a strange, emotional, level, much in the same way "AB" grabs ahold of you. The movie center's on a weird, mentally, troubled teenager instead of "Beauty's" middle-aged family man. Yet, his family and community around him are slice of perfect Americana gone wrong, with little pieces of ugliness bubbling up at random times.
If this movie got a wider release, I am sure it would be getting award nominations left and right. It is far better than "Mullholland Drive" in almost every aspect(which is a good film), which was just named best picture of 2001 by the National Society of Film Critics on Saturday.
Has anyone around here seen it?
Follow Ups:
I've seen it, though I don't share your enthusiasm. I just didn't find the story all that grabbing, and a far cry from American Beauty in my book. And far from Mulholland Drive as well, and you already know how I feel about that one :-)Call me superficial, but my favorite line was: "What's a f**k-ass?"
I would have liked to see some more dysfunctional family situations and less of Donnie's "fantasy".
Oh, I do really like the Donnie Darko movie poster. Very disturbing and very representative of the film.
You know what? I'll wait for the DVD and watch it again before I finalize my judgment. I did that with Thin Red Line and now I absolutely love it. Strange, huh?
I prefer "Donnie Darko" over "Mulholland" by miles in nearly every aspect, especially running time. For some reason, it really seemed to grab me, although it could have been my full belly of sushi, sake, and Sapporo :o)For one thing, I'm an insufferable Scifi geek and anything with wormhole/timetravel in it is bound to strike a note. Also, I found many of the most awkward high school moments to be painfully realistic. But, you are right in saying they should have taken more time to establish Donnie and his screwed up family life.
Anyway, I'll email you with my thoughts on what the actualk storyline was.
You both seemed to like the American Beauty.Wanna form a triangle now?
