I thouroughtly enjoyed it, althought my wife was mildly annoyed by this long and deliberate film. I would not even mind wathing it again - so much style and top class imagery. Who could forget the face of that girl that killed herself - such charged emotional scene. At almost three hours this is not for everyone's stamina, and I do often get restless, but here I felt completely comfortable and relaxed, just flowing with it. I could certainly see some weaknesses - not too few, actually - but somehow they did not distract.
Perhaps not the finest Gong Li's performance as she is beginning to believe that here very presense is enough, perhaps? But not bad, mind you.
And for you DVD fans - an obligatory image quality statement. It was quite good overal. No, not at the level of your beloved "demo" disks, and "Lost in Space" would kill it on all counts... he-he-he... or rather... crying...
Follow Ups:
This is indeed a great film. The man who plays King Ying Zheng did a wonderful job. That said, though I'm not Chinese I think the film didn't do justice for the historical epics that surround Ying Zhen, his wars to defeat the other countries, his assasins (first by Jin Ke in this film in particular), the transition from the Qin dynasty to the Han dynasty, the great Chu-Han rivalry that followed. These stories all have the irresistable and powerful attraction at least as much as Star Wars, Lords of the Rings,... to many.
I caught this on a flight to Japan (right after seeing "Driven", yikes!) and thought it was quite good. Directed by the great Zhang Yimou and starring Zhang Zi Yi ("Crouching Tiger").I haven't seen Wong Kar-Wei's "In The Mood For Love" yet. Looking forward to watching Maggie Cheung again.
Keep us posted on In The Mood. She is beautiful. But I have to admit - asian faces are for me harder to keep in memory, they fade away faster. I didn't know she already made over 80 films - and she's just 37.
If you expect another Judou or Raise the Red Lantern, you'll be dissapoint. Doesn't mean it's a bad, but each time Zhang release a movie, we expect a classic, that wasn't the case with The Road Home. If you haven't seen his previous work, Not One Less, well what are you waiting for?As for In The Mood for Love, all newspaper from Montreal gave it a almost perfect rating. Depend on each one taste, I like movies with good plots, not really the strengt of Wong Kar-Wei, but In The Mood For Love is very beautiful. Happy Together is still his best.
The Road Home : ***
Not One Less : ****1/2
In The Mood for Love: ***1/2
a lot of them are great yet disturbing. Another good one with Gong Li is Raise the Red Lantern. I don't think your wife would like this either, lol.Another worth mention is Farewell My Concubine.
Don't forget these, if so, you miss something.Classic (5 stars)
- Happy Together : directed by Wong Kar-Wei, the movie the most
impressive visually.
- Red cherry : 1995 #1 chinese box office and for good reason. Set in Russia during the 2nd world war. The plot of Schinler's List sucks (lack) in
comparison even if it's well directed.
- Temptation of a monk: one of the best movie ever made. Similar to
Braveheart, but much better and ultraviolent.Very good (4 stars)
- Firecracker
- King of Mask
- Shadow Magic( 2 most known chinese director)
Chen Kaige
- The Emporor & the Assasin
- Farewell My Concubine
- Tempress Moon
Zhang Yimou
- Ju-dou
- Not One Less
- Raise the Red Lantern
- Red Shorgum
- Shangai Triad
Yes, I think we have seen most of her films. Ju Dou is perhaps the most beautiful. My wife liked the Lantern, actually.
The Concubine was I thought too tedious.
One think I still just can't take is the Chinese opera. I'll take Verdi any day.
To me the story is engaging and intriguing so I was not bored in the least. I thought it was almost an epic of people, feelings, and life twisting around upon itself.Till you just mentioned it, I was unaware it was 3 hours!
