Just curious who you think are some of the best actresses around in film or tv.My votes go to Cate Blanchett, Rachel Griffiths and Helen Mirren.

Everything she's done, from "Carrie" to "The Straight Story" has been acted wonderfully. I haven't yet seen the Bedroom movie, but she obviously didn't mail this one in either.
100% agree, she's capable of a great many types of role, and she's profoundly underrated IMHO, she never been "bad" in anything I've seen here in either. Without her; "Carrie" would be just a very average, eminently forgettable "B" movie, as it is it's more of a cult classic. She seems quite capable of single handedly salvageing any film she's appeared in, no mean feat when it's garbage like "Blast from the Past".
I admire her fearlessness, as she has taken on some very difficult roles (although she's been in crap, too).
An excellent body of work, then poof--she disappears under my radar.
Emma Thompson was most recently in "Wit" shown on HBO. Very moving and excellent performance.
She made a few films in the recent years, including one fot Amnesty International... I have love-hate relationship with her. Sometimes I admire her work, sometimes she bores me to near death.
Really agree with the Helen Mirren choice. She's exceptional. The others are merely good, IMHO.I would choose Judy Dench, Allison Janey, Maggie Smith, Judy Davis, Jodie Foster, Lynn Thigpin, Conchata Ferrel (sp?), Stockard Channing, Jane Alexander, and Helen Mirren. They are not in order.
Judi Dench, for sure, but then she's been around for year, and was always very competent in any of her endeavors.It seems there are more "personalities" these days, than actual
"Stars". These personalities are just faceless, soulless, cardboard cutouts, and we don't "know" them like we did a couple of generations ago, when there was more substance linked to actors and actresses name. Sad really, because it indicates that we have lost our connectivity to these cutouts...alot has to do with our Mass Media environment.
I've been a Judi Dench fan for many years. Yes, she's been around a while. Wasn't the original question about THE BEST ACTRESSES?With the exception of Allison Janey, who is on The West Wing, and whom I think is the best "new" actress around, and Jodie Foster, you'll find that my list is of actresses all over 40 years of age. There are some fine younger actresses but, with a few exceptions, none have paid their dues. You might say they have not consistently proven themselves. Too many roles can be performed adequately by a zombie and so many of the young actors and actresses have about that much ability.

To me the Male "Personalities" are none better. Matt Damon, Ben Afflect, Ed Norton, Ben Stiller....etc. I can never differentiate between Ben Afflect and Matthew McConnaghy, or whatever his name is...They just coalesce into one amorphous Blob of Nothing. All I remember about U-571 is Harvey Keitel...and The Others.
To see Damon working with real actors and a real script, as he did in "The Rainmaker", made his blandness is mistaken for calculated understatement, and made his weak style even more pronounced. It was a real stretch for him. Dean Stockwell, Roy Schieder, Teresa Wright, Mickey Rourke, Jon Voight, Danny DeVito, even Virginia Madsen's small but plot pivotal role outshown Damon! And he is supposed to be the New Hollywood. He has a long way to go...and he is ahead of the pack here!
I couldn't agree more. So many "Stars" with lots of glitter but no heat.Damon isn't the worst but he is an unsubtle actor. There are some good actors in the new generation but most of them are products of the mill, just like so many pop singers. They're pretty but there's no substance.
I really dislike Jim Carrey. I know I'm in the minority but I find his manic delivery tiresome and his attempts at drama, as in THE MAJESTIC, are painful to watch. He has plenty of talent but he needs discipline!
No one is as bad as Pamela Anderson - she sets a new low in acting ability and has negative charisma - but there are many that are close on her heels.
Of course, actors are sometimes only as good as the roles they play and that is a big problem. Scripts go for the big boom but are too often just another rehash of the same old hoary cliches. PEARL HARBOR and, IMHO, MOULIN ROUGE are good examples of baaaaaaaaaaad scripts. Herman J. Mankewitz and Dalton Trumbo and Rod Serling seem to have been forgotten and the hacks have taken over! Of course, the mentioned writers are deceased and a good intelligent script probably is a hard sell. Too bad. We need another Reginald Rose or Paddy Chayeski. Some of the movies I've seen lately, especially what passes for comedy, belong to the Ed Wood school of scriptwriting.
And if I never have to see Ben Stiller or Adam Sandler again I will be very happy. Or Shannon Dougherty, Chris Tucker, Demi Moore, Tom Cruise.............take your pick; it's a very long list.
