I would have to say that the 10 greatest performances by an actress I have ever seen are these:1. Kate Hepburn in THE LION IN WINTER (1968)
2. Maggie Smith in THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE (1968)
3. Bette Davis in ALL ABOUT EVE (1950)
4. Maria Falconetti in THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC (1928)
5. Meryl Streep in SOPHIE'S CHOICE (1982)
6. Guiletta Masina in NIGHTS OF CABIRIA (1957) and LA STRADA (1954)
7. Melina Mecuri (sp?) in NEVER ON SUNDAY (1960)
8. Jill Clayburgh in AN UNMARRIED WOMAN (1978)
9. Jeanne Moreau in JULES AND JIM (1962)
10. Gena Rowlands in A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1975)
The hard part was deciding what to leave off.
A list of the worst performances would be easier as there are so many bad ones. Pamela Anderson would probably top that list.....
Follow Ups:
Just off the top of my head:
Viven Leigh - A Streetcar Named Desire
Anna Magnani - The Rose Tattoo
Katherine Hepburn - Long Day's Journey into Night
Elizabeth Taylor - Whos Afraid of Virginia Wolf
Glenda Jackson - Elizabeth R (television)
Meryl Streep - Sophie's Choice & Silkwood
Sissy Spacek - Coal Miner's Daughter
Vanessa Redgrave - Playing for Time (television)
Hellen Mirren - Prime Suspect (television)
A fine list. I give a big yes to Anna Magnani. The Rose Tattoo is an excellent film and Magnani is, to put it mildly, absolutely splendid. My wife, who generally dislikes that type of film (she likes Mel Gibson, Sean Connery, Bruce Willis, action flicks and little else), watched it with me when she was home sick. She kept asking me who that Italian woman was. When I told her she said she was one of the best actresses she had ever seen. That was a rare compliment.
I'd seen the film more than 25 years before and still remembered it. Magnani had an effortless style. She was powerful but never gave the impression she was "acting." And Burt Lancaster turned in one of his finest performances, although I think his turns in The Rainmaker and Birdman of Alcatraz are his best, by a tiny margin.
Speaking of THE RAINMAKER...Kathryn Hepburn was mighty powerful, too. Just another great performance for her. She had a career full of great performances.
I was completely surprised by her role in this movie. I grew up watching this woman in Bedknobs & Broomsticks, and here she is as the end-all-be-all of dragon ladies. Great film, by the way.
Remember that The Manchurian Candidate was made several years before the Disney films Lansbury was in. In TMC she was evil, personified. She played a lot of bad girls early in her career, notably in DeMille's SAMSON AND DELILAH.I agree that TMC is a great film. I saw it when it was first released (I was 10) and then again after its rerelease. I think it is also Sinatra's and Lawrence Harvey's best film - and both had several notable film roles during their careers. It was also a high point for James Gregory, the great character actor who played the senator. It's an intelligent and well written little gem.
At the top of the list for many would have to be Glenda Jackson in the BBC production of Elizabeth R (this 9 hour series has recently become available on DVD).To see her play Elizabeth I from 16 years old to her death is widely considered a tour de force. Worth the effort.
Yes, she was splendid. So was Bette Davis in Elizabeth The Queen.
Faye Dunaway in Chinatown?Mike
Excellent! She was also splendid in Network, which is one of my favorite films.
Susan Sarandon! Why you ask?
For her acting and attempted singing in "Rocky Horror Picture Show"!
That not only took guts, but try acting for 3/4 of the pic in your underwear (Porn stars need not respond to this!), in cold weather (easy to tell if you look close enough!!!).
I'm serious!hehehe....
Dman
Actually, I agree with you. She has turned into a very fine actress, one of the best in the business.
11. diane keaton; annie hall
12. nastasja kinski; paris texas
13. katherine hepburn; bringing up baby (just for fun)
you'll get no argument from me.
he he he
Wow! She's as dumb as a brick and can't act her way out of a paper bag.
Kravitz' video for the song, American Woman? She's a star.
Hi,
the problem with lists, is that they tell you both too much, and not enough, here's an example. Hepburn was in fine form, in The Lion in Winter, no doubt.
But I would not want to introduce someone to her with that movie. I would pick something more like Bringing Up Baby, or Philadelphia Story, just for example. She's a wonderful actress with many good films; seems a shame to pick that one. And for someone familiar with her work, well, they may well have a different favorite. My favorite(s) is anything she did with Spencer Tracy, but of course I adore her teamed up with Cary Grant, but that would leave out Bogie...
You're correct that lists have a tendency to tell you too much and yet not enough, but they also a) provide only subjective imprerssions, and b) establish misleading rankings, ignoring performances that might be deemed equal or superior to those listed once a consensus had been reached by the viewing public. This is the biggest failing of awards presentations, especially the Academy Awards, where intense lobbying/promotional campaigns are employed with the hopes that members will take the time to view your particualr film before casting their vote. All that said, my list of best performances would undoubtably be different albeit similar to thse listed. Among the actresses I would've placed on my top 10 list for dramatic performances I've seen are:
Maria Falconetti (The Passion of Joan of Arc),
Louise Brooks (either for Pandora's Box or Diary of a Lost Girl), Linda Hunt (The Year of Living Dangerously),
Katheryn Hepburn (The African Queen),
Gloria Swanson (either for Sunset Boulevard or Queen Kelly),
Julia Roberts (Erin Brockovitch),
Ingrid Bergman (Casablanca),
Lilian Gish (either for Way Down East or Year of the Hunter),
Bette Davis (All About Eve),
Kate Blanchet (Elizabeth)--- and that's just my subjective perspective on the dramatic side; comedy would be a whole different listing, albeit equally deserving.
Over the years, there've been so many great dramatic performances by so many great actresses. Each era or generation produces differerent criteria to evaluate the calibre of those performances as acting techniques change; some performances gain in stature and others lose their luster. How do you differentiate in order to give a representative cross section?

The purpose of a list, mine anyway, is to start discussion. And I completely forgot Louise Brooks!
And Garbo
And Dietrich
And Mary Astor
And Irene Dunne
And lots of others equally deserving.
But no Elizabeth Taylor. Never on my list although she came close with a few roles.
I think Elizabeth Taylor did an exceptional job in this film--right up there with the best female performances of the 1960's.
I stand corrected, and wittily. Your parity bon mot was cheekily brilliant, btw. Have you seen that English movie about the Queen and (I think) a Scots commoner. It was played by the same woman who played the Queen in 'Shakespeare in Love'; and was a superb perfomrance in a very nice movie. Now if I could just remember the name of the damn thing.
Played by the very great Dame Judy Dench, one of the greatest actresses of all time, IMHO.
