I hope to find a video store with the selections/recommendations that I read about on this board - particulary from Victor, AndrewT, and other, far more involved, film enthusiasts than myself. When I first started visiting my current "independant" store, I thought, "finally, a store that caters to film buffs". Five years later, I've rented pretty much everything I care to watch - including what I "thought" was an outstanding HK selection. They've yet to acquire any of the movies recommended on this board. Perhaps they, too, are selling out.
After reading posts on this board of some wonderful sounding films, I wonder if I should begin my search again...
Thank God for IFC and Bravo.

Aurelio S.

Well, some of those stores hide pretty well. For instance, we didn't even know about the existance of our current store, even though it has been there for over ten years. We simply went each time to TLA in Phily, so it was almost a two hours trip for movies. Someone told us about this one - you can't see it from the road, it is facing the yard.So my advice is to take your yellow pages and visit each store within 30 minutes, you might be as pleasantly surprised as we were.
If you have Video Americain (sic) chain, definitely check them out, as this store has been acquired by them. Their site is:
http://www.videoamericain.com/where.cfm
Also, www.bestvideo.com, for THEIR locations.
Checked whether they would pass the torture test - the Passenger, and they list it in their inventory.Good sign. Are they any close to you?
Checked Americain Video. None of its stores is near me.Best Video is a possibility, although I fear my wife would kick my ass when she discovered that I paid nearly $20 for one 3 day rental. ;-)
A friend also told me about Netflix, but after doing a search here and reading some of the discouraging comments about them, I decided to skip joining.
Actually, I have done what you suggest and visited each store in my yellow pages that wasn't a giant video chain. Ironically, after I posted my note yesterday, I was mentioning my woes to a coworker and he alerted me to "The Freak Shack" located about 6 miles from my house. I paid a visit last night, and although they had some unique stuff, they were about 1/5 the size of my current indie store, so everything they had that I was interested in... I had rented already from my current store.
One thing I haven't done, yet, is to make a list from all the recs I've kept track from this board and take it to Tom (my current store) and have him run through the list to see what he has. In the past, I just asked about 1 or 2 films going on memory.
The Passenger, eh? Checked the archives for your comments and also imdb.com. Sounds very interesting. I'll see if Tom or Freak Shack have it.
Rented "Cement Garden" from the FS last night. Weird...but thought provoking.
Stay tuned and THANKS!

Anoter interesting option is buying used tapes on Amazon. Just a few days ago someone was looking for a rather obscure film, and we could not find it anywhere, and my store didn't have it either. So I checked the Amazon and there it was, the used tape for just $9.99. That's much less than the rental from the bestvideo, and might be just another valuable alternative allowing you to build a nice library.
