I stopped by my store and picked some films, among them - who would expect it there - Wajda's "Landscape Fater Batte" with Olbrykhsky... can't wait to see it tonight. Finding Wajda locally is like finding hapiness...Anyway, spent some time dutifully writing the titles at just one (!) shelf of recent arrivals, just the Asian films, less those I already knew.

There are two types of Music; good and bad
Hello Victor,Hahaha-- This is great! Well, let's see:
' Attack the Gas Station', 'Chunhyang', 'Shiri', 'Memento Mori' are Korean films.
There is a recent renaissance in the industry there, and more and more high quality
films are popping up. For their action films, they're hiring a lot of HK fight choreographers
( e.g. Bichunmoo ) or co-productions ( 'Musa the Warrior' with the Beijing film co. ).
'Attack' is quite enjoyable, but in a slacker chic sorta way. 'Chunhyang' is a romance..
not bad but in likelihood nothing new for you. 'Memento Mori' is an interesting
drama/horror film..about schoolgirls. Not H'wood at all in the characterizations.
'Shiri' was the highest grossing film in Korea..just an interesting story, well told...
but maybe a bit too slick for your taste.See if they have 'The Foul King'..simple comedy about a salaryman who takes up
WWF style wrestling to improve himself ( his manager puts him in a headlock
and humiliates him all the time ). Does the underdog win in this one? This is not H'wood.'Flowers of Shanghai'..latest Hou Hsiao Hsien ( Taiwan ) flick. have you seen 'City of Sadness'?
Part of his oeuvre. I like his films.'The Road Home '..from Zhang Yimou ( Raise The Red Lantern ) Cannes decided against having
his two latest films ( 'Road' and ' Not One Less ') compete because they ' weren't political and
critical of the government enough...take that as you will. The Chinese title says it all " My father,
my mother". If you haven't yet seen 'Ju Dou ' or his other films, then why not look for those instead.Your wife does not want to watch 'Gemini Soseiji'.
There's that 'Gohatto'! Mellower Oshima, about a young samurai whose beauty causes much
problems within his troop.'Shadow magic' I have the DVD for, but it's not here, so I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
I think it's from Mabel Cheung of HK.'Time And Tide' is living proof that Tsui Hark has forgotten how to make movies that I care about.
'As Tears Go By' is that first WKW film I was talking about.
'Suzhou River' is part of the PRC New Wave filmmaking movement. Like WKW meets
Vertigo.'The Duel (from the maker of Storm Riders)' ,' The Legend of the Flying Swordsman'...
only if you think the couch is too good for you.'Horoscope II - the Woman from Hell'..sure, rent his one, Victor!
'Shogun Assassin', 'Zatoichi Meets Yo Jimbo'...well, do you like swordfighting, japanese style?
'Drunken Angel'..early Kurosawa. First appearance by Toshiro Mifune, if I'm not mistaken.'After Life' .Japanese...interesting filmic take on purgatory. Asks the question, " if there was one memory
you could take with you for all eternity, what would it be?" .I think you may like this one.
'Young and Dangerous' part of a multi part Triad saga from Andrew 'Stormriders' Lau. I think you
have bigger fish to fry.Now here's an interesting one: 'Mee Pok Man' Small film from Singapore..you'll get a taste of
how english is spoken there--they call it 'Singlish'. Small enjoyable film. That's it for now..I have to work, I think. More later.
Regards,
A.
I have seen some movies from that list. What I recommend:
- Gohatto (aka Taboo), my favourites recently... too bad, it's about a relation between men, just like Happy Together.
- Shadow Magic, the story about the first moving picture director in China.A waste of time:
- The Duel
- The Legend of the Flying Swordsman
- Young and Dangerous
Contrary to Andrew, I'm not a fan of Hou Hsiao Hsien. Flower of Shangai & the Puppetmaster are boring, nothing happens in these movies.eh Andrew, have you seen Red Chery and Temptation of a Monk? I consider them as a classic?
Hello LP,I haven't seen Red Cherry..what is it about? Yes, I've seen Clara Law's Temptation of A Monk.
It certainly deserves watching. What else have you seen of Ms. Law's? Did you like Autumn Moon?
I think I like Ann Hui a bit better than her, but my favourite quote from Clara Law is, " HK directors
do not have that kind of guts", referring to Hou Hsiao Hsien.Regards,
A
Red Cherry?... here's a summary written by David Carless form www.imdb.com.
It is 1940. Chuchu and Luo Xiaoman are Chinese students who have been sent to study in Moscow, at the International School. She is 13; he is 12. Xiaoman is from Yanan, Mao's base after the Long March; Chuchu had seen her father executed by Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang. The youngsters fit in well and learn to speak Russian... A large group of students, including Chuchu, leave for summer camp in Byelorussia accompanied by their teacher, Miss Vera. Xiaoman remains behind... The Nazis invade the Soviet Union. Moscow remains unoccupied. Xiaoman takes a job delivering condolence letters to soldiers' families. At one apartment, he finds a mother has died. Her very young daughter, Nadia, has not realized it... The summer camp is occupied by Germans. Miss Vera is murdered. One of the Russian boys, Carl, is half-German, and helps the others to escape. They are quickly recaptured. Chuchu and several other students are sent by Gen. von Dietrich to work as servants at Nazi headquarters in the Yakovliv Monastery. The general is also a medical doctor with a peculiar hobby, tattooing...Red Cherry is based on a true story and were China #1 box office in 1996. You won't forget what happened is this movie after watching it and will still remember it as one of the best movie ever made. Highly recommended.
For miss Clara Law, the other film I've seen from her is Floating Life and my opinion is the opposite to what I have for Temptation of a Monk. Does she makes others greats films?
Ann Hui? I believe my video club has some of her films, but I'm not 100% sure. What would you recommend?
thanks.
Hello LP,Thanks! --I'll go look for Red Cherry. Who directed it, by the way?
You may want to look for Clara Law's 'Autumn Moon'.
Ann Hui...let's see..maybe try 'Summer Snow', or 'Song of the Exile'.
She also made 'Boat People', and her most recent film ( horror/drama)was a bit spotty..
'Visible Secret'. I only found it interesting in places, and didn't like most of the cast...
Hsu Chi wasn't bad, and the scene with the Taoist monk/exorcist was pretty funny.Regards,
A.
Ye Daying produced it, writed it and directed it. Maybe he's the next Zhang Yimou?
As I said... wow... and thank you. I am sure I am not alone in copying this list with your comments.
.
Hello Victor,You're very welcome, as usual.
A few things about the film series ' Kozure Okami ' @ The Babycart Assassin or whatever.
The story was serialized for TV in japan, and I think was more successful than all the
subsequent movies. The story is immensely popular in Japan, and if you really want to
enjoy it, the best was is through the manga ( jap 'comics' ) which ran in the 70s.
Written by Koike and illustrated by Kojima..it is extremely cinematic in its handling
of shots to compress or expand time. It was an extremely influential series, and transcends
the common ghettoization of 'comics' as a serious medium over here in N America,
unlike say Europe who have their luminaries like Moebius et al. Luckily for all you Americans,
The' Lone Wolf and Cub' manga has been translated and reissued over here. Also, you mention' Crimes' but never 'Husbands & Wives '...didn't like it?
Regards,
A.
