Sorry, I'm sure that Moulin Rouge has a strong fan following, but if there's one kind of cinema I can't stand it's a film with a historical setting revised with contemporary mannerisms to make it "hip" for a pseudo-sophisticated audience. The only exception I have to this rule are Shakespearian dramas which, on occasion, manage to successfully thread that needle of historical transposition without damaging the source material (i.e., Richard III comes to mind). Most other efforts along this line usually come out as silly as Dumb & Dumber, Austin Powers, Ace Ventura, Joe Dirt, etc., etc.Ar any rate, last year had fewer great films than year previous, IMHO. This year promises much more interesting film fare in just about every genre, but it remains to be seen whether the stars will shine or the turkeys'll reign.

My sentiments exactly. Moulin Rouge was more than I could take. It had style but that doesn't make a good movie.
Well, a quick glance reveals that Memento is out, and Moulin Rouge is in. The entire committee must have a combined IQ of say, 80?
Which is pretty appropriate. I think it was a fantastic movie . . but not because of the acting or directing or sound. This movie is special because of how they forced you into the mindset of the protagonist by using the reversed storyline gimmick. They managed to pull it off so well because of excellent writing and careful editing.
Yeah, I'm sure anyone could have done as well as Guy Pierce (sarcasm). Anyway, my original post was in reference to best picture only (although I didn't make that clear).
And getting more so each year.
or care, for that matter.
