The score is similar to what one would find in a Mamet film. Incidental and only used to set the mood. The Special Edition is out in April and features 5.1. The disc I have (#907801) is Stereo Surround only, which I found odd. The score is crisp enough but not outstanding. Again, I'm annoyed that another version of a film is coming out. Why don't they just issue a disc with all the extras at the start?

I'd more or less agree with you regarding the comparison to an incidental and mood-setting score for a Mamet film (e.g. House of Games, Homicide, Heist) with the notable exception of The Spanish Prisoner. I think Carter Burwell's score is an integral part of that film. The score to The Usual Suspects is unremarkable, albeit servicable, incidental music, and the only good parts are plagiarized from John Williams' "The Conspirators" from JFK. I can think of a thousand scores more worthy of a purchase than John Ottman's The Usual Suspects.
The movie, however, is quite good, albeit not as good as Mamet's The Spanish Prisoner. MGM is releasing a two disc SE in a couple months so I'd wait for that. The original DVD was non-anamorphic and had Dolby Surround.
