Hi, AH - I read this years ago and it's always stayed with me as a truly unique piece of writing. I don't have clear memories of the actual story-line, but the over-all image of it has never left me.
I guess with the evolution of special effects today, this could be made into a stunning movie and, if I remember rightly, the end is pretty pessimistic (ending with the title?) so I don't know how Hollywood would handle that end?
Follow Ups:
about the ending. Too horrific to contemplate concerning the
main character as he suffers a fate worse than death. The story would
have to be altered a great deal. Probably why a film adaptation
has never been tried. Just one of those types of stories resistant to
film. Oh well. - AH
