Just got through seeing this film on DVD...very competent, taut, film about the concept of New Celebrity Culture and murder.Nothing gratuitous, everything is aimed at making a point, which it does to great results.
This is the first film that Kelsey Grammer uses his acting noodle on, and to great effect and positive results. I thought he was finished with that "Down Periscope" piece of crap he was in. This usual piece of crap is what film is these days...disposable and easily forgettable unless it's resurrected on Tv.
He genuinely has a career in films if he wants one...but it takes alot of work, and not just sliding or coasting with a coy, Jack Benny impersonation, like he does every week on "Frasier". For a generation who doesn't know Jack Benny that may be well and good...but someone is going to get wise soon. For Kelsey it's either mounds of money on Tv or a really good film career. I think he will chose Tv.
Follow Ups:
For what he had to work with in down Periscope, I thought Kelsey did a pretty good job, as he does with most every part.He says that he does a number of different impersonations on Frasier, including Jack Benny and Bette Davis.
It's nice that he admits it steals...but who is the real Kelsey Grammer, Ac-torrrrrr? "15 Minutes" was a good example for his reel, and to show he could...ahem...act seriously, meaning characterization. To me, mugging to the camera isn't acting...it's acting if one had a gun to one's head. It's not a crime to do it, but it isn't something to "write home about" and enter into the pantheon of film classics..."Instant Classics", maybe.
"Down Periscope" is a good example of one of those films that includes alot of extremes...string enough of them together with cast straight from the "C" Actor's List, and one has a good shot at making a film with a reasonable shot at making some money.
The tip off to a cast like this is Tim Curry as the Arch Villian...now there was another good example of mugging but better mugging than Grammer could muster up with an occasional knowing leer thrown in.
I still think he's going to pick the pile of Tv money...it's just easier and will give him more recreational time.
