I loved this movie..It was so freaky, I couldn't sleep well that night. Any comments...
I really liked this movie. Just when I thought I was following it, it changed gears and kept surprising me. Moments of terror, sadness, mystery and total fright. This movie also has one of my favorite overlooked actresses in it - Elizabeth Pena. She is always very good and overlooked. Same as Lena Olin and Deborah Unger.
... the biblical dream or Tesla's aparatus?
Saw this flick when it came out; not a fan of Tim Robbins (too wimpy); film
was interesting, don't remember a lot, something about experimental
drugs that Jacob had been unknowingly given to increase his aggressiveness
by the Army in Vietnam. Believe the flashbacks were induced by residual effects of these drugs. For

Its not either, But check it out, its great...I'd like to hear your comments though..
The DVD is great, with excellent sound. The ending is a copout. They should have stuck with the ambiguity and left us shaking in our boots. Still an impressive horror film, and that faceless vibrating head is something straight from my dreams of hell.
I don't like horror films, and here's a good example of the reason. This film caught my interest because of the subject matter and my interest in Tim Robbins (like him or not, you have to keep track of what he does). Ya Steve, that head trick made me soil my pants--and it's not so much the effect as it is the context in which the effect occurs. I can't handle excelent scares like this or graphic violence--the images stay too long in my head (the baby crawling on the ceiling in "Trainspotting" haunts me still!--you can be sure I picked a hell of a time to stop injecting Heroin). I too love ambigious films, and hate it when Hollywood feels the need to "explain" everything to you at the end.
I'm still puzzling over the ending of "2001". Reading the book was no help either. It's one of the reasons I love to watch that film over and over--maybe this time I'll figure it out. There's a bit in the Tibetan Book of the Dead where they explain how you choose your parents when the unenlightened soul riding around the wheel of Karma focuses on couples copulating...but they movie stops before they get to that part.
